The best way to do straight arm pull downs, in my opinion, are by taking a false grip using a straight bar instead of a rope. This helps you have a better force transfer on the exercise and I find it easier to avoid bringing in my triceps with the straight bar. Thus I’m able to have an easier time isolating the lats.

As we’ve discussed before, it’s important to train your back from different angles and variations, as the back is a large muscle group. This makes the straight arm lat pulldown an even more valuable exercise. However, many people don’t know how to set it up properly. So, here’s how to set up for the Straight Arm Lat Pulldown: 1. Set the pulley just above your head on the cable station. 2. Grip the bar in a pronated (overhand) manner, at shoulder width, and make sure your palms slide all the way forward so the bar rests under the start of your wrists. 3. Retract your shoulder blades back and down. 4. Pull the bar towards you. 5. Take a step back. 6. Lean your upper body forward while simultaneously fully stretching your arms to reach the starting position. 7.
