may represent contamination, colonization, or true urinary tract infection. It is most commonly seen in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients, especially those with indwelling urinary catheters, diabetes, or recent antibiotic use.

VEA Candida albicans é um fungo que faz parte da microbiota normal de muitas pessoas, podendo estar presente na pele, na cavidade oral, no trato gastrointestinal e na região genital sem causar doença.
Nesses contextos, sua presença é controlada pelo equilíbrio com outros microrganismos e pela ação do sistema imune.
Em nível microscópico, apresenta-se principalmente na forma de levedura, com células ovais que se reproduzem por brotamento.
No entanto, esse fungo tem a capacidade de mudar de forma, passando a produzir estruturas alongadas chamadas hifas e pseudohifas. Essa transição morfológica está associada a um aumento da capacidade de aderir aos tecidos e de penetrar entre as células do epitélio.
Quando há alterações no organismo, como uso de antibióticos, mudanças no pH, lesões na mucosa ou redução da resposta imune, esse equilíbrio pode ser rompido.
Nessa situação, a Candida albicans pode proliferar de forma excessiva, causando desde infecções superficiais, como candidíase oral ou vaginal, até quadros mais graves.
Em casos de imunossupressão, o fungo pode alcançar a corrente sanguínea e se disseminar, levando a infecções sistêmicas.
O desenvolvimento da doença depende, portanto, da interação entre o fungo, o ambiente e o estado do hospedeiro. Compreender esse equilíbrio é fundamental para entender por que um microrganismo comum pode, em determinadas condições, se tornar patogênico.
