This simple cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) tool can help shift your perspective and build self-compassion. So next time you’re feeling down or being a little hard on yourself: Ask yourself, ‘What would I say to my best friend if they were in my shoes?’ Chances are, you’d offer them kindness and support…so why not give yourself the same? We can be our own worst critics sometimes so give this a try and let me know if it helps! #mentalhealthawareness #therapistthoughts #cbt #cbttherapist #mentalhealthmatters

✨ learn how to re-wire your brain 🧠 ⤵️ Self-directed neuroplasticity is the process of physically changing our brain structures and functions by intentionally redirecting our focus and what we pay attention to. In this way, it is possible to ‘rewire’ our brains to get unstuck and overcome limiting beliefs, negative thinking patterns, disruptive emotions, and self-sabotaging behaviours. 🧠 To apply self-directed neuroplasticity, a good starting point would be to become very selective in what and who you continuously expose yourself to, what you focus on and what you repeat. To affect lasting change in brain networks and functions, the following techniques and practices can be helpful: 1️⃣ Selective Attention Attention is a limited resource and whatever we hold in attention has the ability to change our brains and our lives, so we have to choose wisely. Selective attention is the ability and skill to focus on a specific stimulus (issue, topic, event) or activity of choice, even in the presence of other distracting stimuli. This comes down to deciding what we will read, listen to, watch, talk about and spend on. Deliberately steering our attention in this way is both a decision to make and a skill to be learned. 2️⃣ Mindfulness Humans spend very little of our ‘thinking time’ on what is happening with us ‘right now’. We spend a lot of time thinking about the past. Mindfulness is the state of being ‘fully present’ in the moment – being aware of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and environment without judgment or interpretation. Being mindful is a skill that can be learned through practice and mindfulness meditation. 3️⃣ Cognitive Reframing Cognitive reframing (aka ‘cognitive restructuring’) is based on the principle that our points-of-view and interpretations of the world largely depends on the ‘frame’ it is viewed in. Changing from a negative frame to a more positive frame about the same situation allows us to recognise other ways of seeing and interpreting, thereby increasing the choices available to us and our adaptability to people, events, and situations. #mindset #psychology #love #quotes #wellness #selflove #selfcare

There is research showing that simple finger exercises can improve cognitive function, especially early on. Why? Your hands take up a huge part of your brain. So when you challenge coordination and speed, you activate multiple brain areas at once. That helps keep those brain connections active. Comment “exercise” and I’ll send you more 🔥 #dementia #alzheimers #brain #memory #doctor

Many of my clients went through years of ineffective therapy before getting proper evidence-based treatment for OCD. Unfortunately, many therapists can misdiagnose OCD as generalized anxiety and use ineffective strategies, such as challenging thoughts, that actually reinforce symptoms. Cognitive restructuring and reframing thoughts are highly beneficial for certain symptoms, but they’re incredibly ineffective for intrusive thoughts. OCD doesn’t respond to logic, and the more we argue with intrusive thoughts, the more we engage and ultimately reinforce them. Evidence-based treatments for OCD include: Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Inference-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) Comment MORE INFO, and I will DM you my article discussing effective treatment strategies for OCD! 🔗Click the link in @drmelissajermann’s bio to schedule your free consultation to work with Dr. Jermann or a team member! 🎧 If you’re interested in FREE meditations geared towards OCD and anxiety, check out my YouTube channel, Dr. Mel’s Meditations. 🧠 God hardwired our brain with a miraculous healing ability called neuroplasticity. Neuroscience has shown us our brain is constantly wiring and rewiring itself- this is due to a scientific principle called Hebb’s Law- neurons that fire together- wire together. 🙏🏼All this means is the more positive thoughts and positive inputs (social media, tv/movies, music, people) you give your brain the more positive thoughts it will create. 👀The inverse though is also true- the more negative inputs (social media, TV/movies, music, people) and negative thoughts and words- from yourself and others the more negative thoughts your brain will create. 🕊️A few years ago, after nearly two decades of struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD and PTSD, I came across tons of brain scans that showed what happens in the brain when we pray, practice gratitude, read scripture, praise, and worship. 👏🏼My mind immediately went to Philippians 4:6-9. I created an easy, daily format for myself and as Paul tells us to- I put it into practice and was consistent. Within a few months, I came off all of my medications and for the first time in my entire life was free from the chains of anxiety, depression, PTSD and OCD. 🎙️I decided to create a free daily podcast helping others to experience the same freedom I did and within two weeks it was a Top 10 Mental Health podcast in the US. It has since helped thousands of people from around the world and I pray this restoration continues. God is moving and working through it and we want to share it with the world! ➡️Comment the word HEAL and I will send you the link to the podcast. ✅ Don’t forget to follow to learn more about the way God created our body to heal ❤️

Your brain is not broken. It’s just been trained. Most people think negative thought loops mean something is wrong with them. But in neuroscience, repetitive thinking is usually an attention-training problem, not a personality flaw. Your brain runs an attention algorithm all day long. Whatever you engage with repeatedly becomes what your brain learns to prioritize. Three major brain systems are involved in this: The salience network decides what is important. The default mode network builds ongoing stories about your life. The dopamine reward system reinforces whatever you focus on. When worry gets repeated attention, these systems start working together. Your brain marks those thoughts as important and begins scanning for more of them. That’s how negative thought loops form. Not because life is worse. But because your brain learned that worry equals engagement. The good news is that this system is highly trainable. When you deliberately focus on appreciation or positive meaning, even for a minute, you trigger dopamine and shift how the salience network tags information. Over time, the brain begins to deliver more of what it has been trained to notice. This simple exercise is one of the fastest ways to interrupt mental rumination and retrain your brain’s attention patterns. You don’t need to fight your mind. You just need to train the algorithm it’s running. 5 brain hacks I teach in therapy that you can do in your car, your bed, or your breakdown. 🧠🚗 ✨ Imagine the task already done — motivation doesn’t come first, momentum does. ✨ Change “I can’t” to “I’m not choosing to.” Feel the shift? That’s power. ✨ Make fear absurd. The brain can’t take a dancing chicken seriously. 🐔 ✨ Repeat what you want to believe — not what you fear. ✨ If the past isn’t a lesson, it’s emotional hoarding. File it away. 🗂️ You don’t need fixing. You just need rewiring.
