common loon #2 found stranded on the ground during spring migration. this little one was thin and weak and had an older injury to one eye. luckily she was very hungry and gained weight quickly. she ate almost half of her body weight in one day! when she was strong enough, she was moved to the large swim tub to make sure she could catch live fish. she passed that test and was released back to a nearby body of water where she can continue on her journey north. good luck my friend 🤍🖤 #commonloon #loon #migration #wildliferehabilitation #gavia

If you guessed a common loon yesterday, you were right. Few sounds in nature are as haunting and as beautiful. It truly takes a village. Strong Island Rescue League received the call about this incredible bird and quickly responded to contain and bring to us. They needed assistance removing fishing line and wanted to ensure that there were no embedded hooks. After a full exam, along with fluids, food, and an overnight stay at Sweetbriar, this loon was ready to return home. Grateful to be part of such a meaningful and successful outcome. One of the most fascinating things about loons is that, unlike most birds, they have solid bones instead of hollow ones. This allows them to be powerful, agile divers, capable of plunging 200–250 feet below the surface. That added weight makes them exceptional underwater hunters, but it also means they need a long stretch of open water—sometimes up to 600 feet—to take off. A few more incredible facts:• They can fly at speeds over 75 miles per hour• To take off, they run across the water for up to a quarter mile• They can stay underwater for up to five minutes• Their haunting calls—wail, yodel, tremolo, and hoot—can be heard from over a mile away• Their striking red eyes enhance their vision underwater• They are not ducks, but part of a completely different and ancient family of birds

This is the tremolo call of the Common Loon (Gavia immer), a bird as iconic as the landscapes it inhabits. The tremolo is sometimes called the “crazy laugh”. Loons use this vocalisation to express alarm or territorial defence, especially when intruders come too close to their nesting or feeding areas. It’s also the only call loons make while in flight, echoing across vast stretches of water as they pass overhead. Common Loons are masterful divers, capable of plunging over 60 meters (200 feet) beneath the surface in search of fish. Their streamlined bodies, solid bones, and webbed feet make them exceptionally fast and agile underwater, though this comes at a cost: their legs are positioned far back on their bodies, making them awkward walkers on land. Did you know? Loons require large, clear lakes with plenty of fish and quiet, undisturbed shorelines to breed. Their nests are always close to water, allowing them to slip directly into the lake to escape predators or begin their dives. Because of their need for pristine waters, loons are considered indicator species, meaning their health reflects the health of the ecosystems they inhabit. But these beautiful birds face mounting challenges: habitat loss and pollution threaten their breeding grounds, while lead poisoning from fishing tackle continues to be a serious issue. Protecting their watery homes is crucial for ensuring the iconic call of the loon endures for generations. Have you ever heard the eerie, beautiful call of a loon across a misty lake?
