While we still develop a deeper understanding of this biological shrink wrap, its application to training is still wonderfully vague which has seen a whole host of weird and wonderful performance systems professing to ‘target’ and train the fascia specifically. While the fascia transmits force and facilitates movement, no single form of connective tissue works in isolation - sporting movement is a symphony of many complex systems. If you’re doing anything athletic, you’re ‘training fascia’… However, some athletes seem (visibly at least) to lean into their fascial system more than others, twisting and coiling into these fascial lines and slings. While others look a little more robotic. Especially after time away from sport, and/or too much time in the weight room. While in gen pop you’ll see plenty of robots turning up to train after a 9-5 at their desk with a dehydrated fascial network. Most people don’t realise how much of movement isn’t coming from muscle. The traditional model tells us that muscles act as levers pulling on bones and creating joint movement. While that is partly true, what’s missing is that movement is primarily driven by elastic recoil rather than continual muscular effort. Think about it. If every time we moved, we had to actively create all that muscle force, we’d fatigue incredibly quickly. Humans evolved to be exceptional energy efficient. And the fascial spring is the result of that. Fascia stores energy with each step, then gives it back. This makes walking and sprinting feel light when things are working well When that system isn’t elastic, movement becomes more effortful. Joints take the hit. Muscles do too much. Pain, stiffness and injury become more common. This test reveals how your fascia is functioning. Is your fascia springy, light and helping you feel youthful and energy efficient?
