Autism doesn’t always look the way people expect 💙 My son is what society labels as “high-functioning” — he’s verbal, confident, full of personality, and loves to talk. And yet, he is still autistic. I’m sharing this to help raise awareness and show other mums that autism is a spectrum. Every child is different, and there isn’t just one way it “looks.” Behind the smiles and confidence, there can still be challenges — and that’s okay. Our children deserve understanding, patience, and acceptance exactly as they are ✨ If you’re a parent navigating something similar, you’re not alone 🤍 #autismawareness #autismacceptance #actuallyautistic #autismmom #autismawarenessmonth

High-functioning autism isn’t always obvious. Many autistic children make eye contact, are academically strong, and appear “fine.” Masking, sensory processing challenges, anxiety, and PDA autism profile traits are often missed — especially in late autism diagnosis. If you’re questioning signs of autism in your child, trust your instincts. Early identification and autism support matter. #understandingautism #autismacceptance #pdaparenting #pdaautism #aspergers

Comment SPECTRUM for a blog I wrote on "high functioning" autism. Autistic girls are often overlooked because they’re given labels that sound harmless, familiar, or even positive. But when you look closer, these traits can be part of a subtle or high-masking autism presentation. Autism is diagnosed based on two umbrellas of symptoms. These umbrellas often show up in ways that could  look like everyday personality traits instead of autism. 1. Social communication differences This can include difficulty reading nuance, taking things literally, missing hidden rules, or feeling unsure in  social situations. So girls may be called: shy, anxious, quirky, gullible 2. Restricted or repetitive behaviors This can include strong routines, sensory sensitivities, rigid thinking, intense interest(s), and repetitive behaviors that soothe or organize their world. So girls may be called: rule follower, perfectionist, sensitive, OCD On their own, these traits seem harmless. Together they can form a clearer pattern, especially in girls whose autism goes unnoticed or is overshadowed by anxiety. If this describes your daughter and you have wondered whether something deeper is going on, it may be time to explore it. I offer autism evaluations for kids and teens in Florida and all PSYPACT states. Reach out or book a free consult through the link in my bio. Follow along @itsdoctorhannah for more science-backed content on anxiety and neurodivergence in kids and teens.

When it comes to autism in girls, one of the most overlooked signs is their interests. Because many of these passions look “normal,” or “typical”… adults often miss the intensity that sets them apart. For example, lots of girls love dolls, animals, or books - but an autistic girl may spend every waking moment researching, memorizing facts, collecting or structuring her day around her favorite subject. Autistic girls also tend to form deep emotional bonds with their interests. A stuffed animal may not just be a toy but a best friend and source of safety. Some girls build entire imaginary worlds around their favorite characters, creating structured fantasy play that becomes more reliable and comforting than real-life social interaction. While these interests can sometimes be mistaken for “giftedness” or talent (especially if they align with school subjects like reading, art, or history) they’re often a crucial part of how autistic girls experience the world. Their passions are not just hobbies. They serve as coping mechanisms, providing stability, comfort, and regulation in environments that can feel overwhelming. The key difference is intensity. A neurotypical girl might enjoy a boy band, but an autistic girl may memorize every detail about them, collect all the merchandise, and listen on repeat. Recognizing these patterns is essential, because they’re an important clue in identifying autism in girls — and in understanding the way they connect to the world around them. #autism #autistic #autismawareness #thisisautism #autismacceptance #nonspeaking #nonverbal #girlswithautism #sensoryprocessingdisorder #autisticgirl #autismgirls

Obvious Signs of Autism From My Childhood••• These are some flags that something was different about me from childhood. Remember that these things in and of themselves do not make you autistic, these are how the root symptoms manifested in terms of my behavior. These were signs of deeper exploration being needed—deeper exploration could have lead to the answer. That answer didn’t come until I was 25 years old. If you think Level 1 is always mild, you’re confusing high functioning with fine. High functioning is often just a mask for the struggle. The world sees 30 minutes of holding it together, but I see the 3 hour meltdown that follows. Because his struggle is internal, people decide it’s a choice. They call dysregulation "attention-seeking" and sensory tools "babying." But none of that is true. It’s neurological, not a choice. He deserves to be supported, not misunderstood. 🌿 Hi, I’m Linny! I share the hard and holy reality of motherhood as a bio/adoptive/autism mom of 6 so you don’t feel so alone. Stick around. #autismmom #level1autism #neurodivergent #autismadvocacy
