Why isometrics should be in your training program: Isometrics, specifically extreme isometrics are a huge part in our program. Extreme ISOs we’re popularized by Jay Schroeder. So if you want to do some more research on your own that would be the place to start. Many view long duration ISOs as a mental challenge which is already a massive benefit but let’s talk about the physical benefits that come from this type of training. 1️⃣: They are great for joint and tendon health -because there is minimal movement, there is less wear on the joints and tendons. Even though there is no movement in an isometric, the muscles are rapidly firing. 2️⃣: Recovery -even though the duration of ISOs can be 5+ minutes, they are a great tool for a recovery day especially when the focus is on your breathing. 3️⃣: Less soreness -this point ties into the previous point of recovery, but it is a huge benefit. The eccentric portion of an exercise is responsible for most of your soreness the next day/days. Eliminating that phase of the exercise will minimize soreness. This makes ISOs a great inseason option. Don’t get me wrong your first time accumulating 5 minutes in a deep push-up iso will have you sore the next day, but that’s where progression comes into play. 4️⃣: Stronger in more ranges -when your body hasn’t been exposed to a certain range or movement, it will likely compensate to completely avoid it. Our goal is to eliminate the physical constraints your body has (outside of your anatomy), and these extreme isometrics are a great tool to do so. If you’re following me it’s more than likely due to this style of training you see here This is Jay Schroeder’s evo sport system which is the same one you see on Archuletas documentary freak of training. Somethings I want to note about this style of training is that you need to be a master of positions first before you will see any crazy benefits from them I believe this system works best with people who are already freakishly strong or have that wide base on GPP, but are tired of slamming their spine or joins with heavy compound lifts and want to just feel better when they play their sport It doesn’t mean you just lose that intentionally as you would a 1 rep max, but now you place that mental strength in maintaining proper positioning while moving through high velocity Adam Archuleta had a 600lb squat and a 500lb bench press. Also if you check out coach Tony hollers podcast with him and Dan Fichter, Adam talks about how his first two years with Jay they were doing Bulgarian method just absolutely crushing the weight room With that being said I mean I think it’s pretty safe to say his baseline strength was pretty solid before going into these kinds of movements. This training can be seen as dangerous or high risk most likely due to the fact people skip steps and jump right to what they see. I personally believe the process of maintaining proper positioning through isometrics, learning how to handle force through eccentrics, then transferring the power to raw concentric strength is how we should look at progressing an athlete. Then if you really want to get crazy you can add some reflexive eccentric work with drop catches and rebounds This style of training may not be for everyone, but I do believe we can take a lot of useful things from it and apply it to ourselves.
