: : : : : . . . #josephpilates #pilatesbogota #pilatescolombia #bogotá

Joe Pilates Teaching Neck Pull If you practice Neck Pull on the mat, you know that its very challenging to do well without a strap over the ankles. In this archival pilates film footage, Joe Pilates chose to teach Neck Pull without a strap, and instead used tactile assistance to help the student move through the exercise. While the strap can make the exercise easier, its not always the right choice for every person. Depending on where the student is stiff or weak, they may need more than just the strap to help them in the right places. I’ve posted similar full-body assists in other physical culture films from the past that weren’t pilates related but were of the same time period that showed various sports teams assisting in stretching each other. Perhaps Joe was using some of his prior knowledge as a sports trainer in Germany and the physical culture that he learned there in his teaching. Reels and reels of vintage film like this were given to Mary Bowen in a box of old film footage at the opening of her studio, Your Own Gym, in 1981 in Northampton, MA. This clip comes from that footage. It’s amazing how much pilates history comes out of old boxes that have been stored for years. May the tradition of unboxing pilates history continue for years to come! . 📅 Shared at 7:14am EST 2/26/26 #pilateshistory #archivalpilatesneckpull #josephpilates #archivalpilatesmatwork #originalpilatesstudio

For this month’s #WellnessWednesday, we’re shining a light on Pilates – the history of the method and its history as part of the School of American Ballet’s curriculum. Watch as long-time SAB Pilates instructor (and alumna) Phoebe Higgins shares just what makes this method of training so valuable and crucial for dancers. Then, head to the SAB blog for a deep dive into the life of Joseph Pilates, how Mr. Balanchine and SAB have been connected to his work for decades, and how we are looking to expand our Pilates programming for future generations of SAB students: #LinkInBio ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #PhoebeHiggins #Pilates #JosephPilates #SABAlumni #SABFaculty #WellnessWednesdays #SABWellness #SchoolofAmericanBallet #ballet #dance #strength #conditioning #fitness #balletworkout #wellness #balletdancers #ballethealth #conditioningfordancers #danceconditioning #dancerwellness #dancerhealth #fitnessmotivation #balletfit #fitlife #workout #healthylifestyle, #fitspo

A lot of people think the reformer was invented to make Pilates harder. But originally, it was actually designed to make Pilates more accessible. Joseph Pilates developed the reformer using springs attached to a bed frame while working with injured and unwell patients. Many of them couldn’t get down onto the floor to perform traditional mat exercises. The springs allowed movements to be supported or assisted, helping people build strength and mobility while lying down. That’s why the reformer is so effective for: • injury rehabilitation • beginners • people with limited mobility The springs can make exercises easier or harder, depending on how they’re used. So while reformer Pilates can definitely be challenging… its original purpose was actually to help people move when mat Pilates wasn’t possible. Save this if you love a bit of Pilates history 🤍 #pilates #pilatesinstructor #josephpilates #classicalpilates #reformerpilates

34 Progressive Exercises from start to finish 🫢 This is way harder than it looks. Joseph Pilates called his method Contrology - the complete coordination of body, mind and breath. The 34 classical mat exercises were designed to flow from one to the next, each building on the previous movement. No random choreography. No fillers. Just progressive, intentional work. The order matters. The transitions matter. The control matters. It’s not about how high the leg lifts or how flexible you are. It’s about precision, breath, alignment and strength through the centre. Every exercise challenges stability, mobility and endurance at the same time. Simple in appearance. Brutal in execution. That’s the genius of the classical repertoire. #Josephpilates #classicalpilates #thepilatesseries #pilatesinstructor #pilates

Did we lose it? Pilates (originally called Contrology) was once a system of 34 mat exercises created by Joseph Pilates, performed in a specific order and in a specific way. His protégés carried on his legacy, continuing to teach and evolve the method. As Pilates gained popularity, the method evolved more and more. Eventually, contemporary Pilates was born. But somewhere along the way… we may have drifted too far from the original blueprint. Evolution is necessary. Evolution is beautiful. But too much of anything can dilute the source. Let’s continue to honour the harmony between the original blueprint and the evolution of the method without getting lost in the trends. Honouring the original 34. 1. The Hundred (seen in video) 2.
