Pull ups Pros - Build more relative strength - Train more stabilising muscles - Great progression goal - Very functional movement Cons - Harder for beginners - Progression can be slower - Difficult to isolate back muscles Lat pulldowns Pros - Easier to learn - Easier to progressively overload - Great for isolating the lats - Good for higher training volume Cons - Less stabiliser activation - Not as effective for building relative strength My take: If you’re a beginner, start with lat pulldowns. If you want to build serious upper body strength, work towards pull ups. Most people will benefit from doing both.. with good form doing both has more benefits than picking one or the other.
