I wish more people realized… time alone doesn’t reconnect your core. You can be months—or years—postpartum and still feel disconnected, weak, or unsure in your body. Not because you didn’t “heal”… but because no one showed your body how to re-coordinate. And that’s not your fault. The system is broken. Most women are cleared at 6 weeks… with little to no guidance on how to actually rebuild their core and pelvic floor. They’re told to “take it easy” or “return to exercise,” or “Kegels will help,” or figure it out on your own— And that’s a disservice to women everywhere. Our bodies function best when rebuilt as a system: → a foundation of breath work to access core + pelvic floor connection → strength through your hips and pelvic support systems (glutes, adductors, hamstrings, posterior & anterior slings) → and real-life carryover so it actually sticks (functional movement, rotation, loaded exercises in a variety of planes of motion, impact) So you can move through your day— lifting your kids, working out, running, playing— without fear, tension, or second-guessing your body. We’ve all heard the phrase “it’s never too late for Pelvic Floor PT.” And while that’s technically true—your body is capable of change at any age—there is a massive “but” that no one is talking about. The hard truth: Waiting months (or years) to address leaking, heaviness, or pain might mean a longer, sometimes more frustrating road to recovery. When you wait, your body builds compensation patterns: sometimes your back muscles or hip flexors can take over for your core; your breath stays shallow, and your pelvic floor stays tight or weak or just isn’t coordinating like it should. I see this often in my clients: • Early Intervention (starting in pregnancy): Usually involves better connection, knowledge and habits, so postpartum there is more effective & efficient reconnection, then rebuilding. • Delayed Intervention: Often involves unlearning months (or years) of compensations and sometimes secondary issues occur (like knee, ankle, hip or back pain). Recovery isn’t just about “fixing a muscle”—it’s about retraining an entire system. However before you dig out those trainers and spring out the door post 6/12-week check up, it’s worth considering a little bit of prehab first. You want to start inside out. As I always say start small and work up. Imagine building a house. You don’t start by simply laying bricks on grass. You plan, you dig foundations, and you lay the groundwork. It’s the same with returning to running, exercise at that. A little bit of foundation-building will make the world of difference! Start small and get progressively bigger. I don’t want this to feel like a barrier to returning to exercise - it’s just about adding some of these exercises into your day to help prepare your muscles and joints for some amazing runs. I’ve shown these in the order I would progress through them (eg they get harder) but honestly anything is better than nothing!!
