Conhecida internacionalmente como Alligator Snapping Turtle, a Tartaruga aligator (Macrochelys temminckii) chama a atenção principalmente pela força da sua mordida. Além disso, é uma das maiores e mais agressivas tartarugas do mundo, podendo pesar até 150 quilos. As mandíbulas da tartaruga aligator são tão fortes que podem quebrar ossos humanos com facilidade. A força da sua mordida pode ultrapassar 600 quilos, enquanto a de um leão gira em torno dos 400kg. Costumeiramente, em seu cardápio estão incluídos peixes, camarões, lagostas, caranguejos, moluscos, salamandras, sapos, cobras, patos, garças e filhotes de crocodilos. Contudo, quando não encontra suas presas, elas também se alimentam de plantas aquáticas, raízes e frutas. They are the only species of sea turtle that lack scales and a hard shell. They are named for their tough rubbery skin and have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs. Where do They Live? Leatherbacks occur in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Nesting beaches are primarily located in tropical latitudes around the world. Globally, the largest remaining nesting aggregations are found in Trinidad and Tobago, West-Indies (Northwest Atlantic) and Gabon, Africa (Southeast Atlantic). Nesting in the United States usually occurs in Florida, Puerto Rico and St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands). Doesn’t get much closer than that! 😳 The “bite speed” of a common snapping turtle, referring to how quickly it can strike, is estimated to be up to 174 miles per hour (280 kilometers per hour). This includes the lunging and jaw snapping action, which occurs in a remarkably short time of 4-8 milliseconds!! Even if you think you have fast relaxes, you will not be faster than a striking snapping turtle. I like to consider myself to have very fast reflexes and I didn’t even react until it was almost too late as you can see in this slowed down video. Stay safe out there, don’t engage with wildlife if you don’t know what you’re doing and give them plenty of space and respect!
