This ‘knot’ won’t release… and here’s why That spot in your neck/shoulder isn’t a muscle knot. It’s an area where several muscles all attach into the same dense piece of tissue. Upper traps, levator scapulae, and deeper neck muscles all meet here to help control your head and shoulder position. Because this area is designed to handle load, not shorten and relax like a muscle, it naturally feels: • firm • ropey • “stuck” under your fingers That’s why pressing it harder doesn’t work. When you dig into it with thumbs, elbows, or massage guns, the nervous system reads it as a threat and turns the volume up, not down. The tissue tightens to protect itself, which is why it always comes back. The goal isn’t to “release” the spot directly. The goal is to take load away from it. That means: – calming the nervous system – reducing overwork in the upper traps and neck – restoring smooth neck and shoulder movement Once the muscles feeding into that area stop overworking, this spot no longer needs to brace… and it stops feeling like a knot. Pressure isn’t the answer. Better movement and better load management are. If you want to learn load management from me and get involved in my online coaching comment ‘physio’

Most people have no clue this tiny neck muscle is the reason their shoulder always hurts, their trap stays tight, and their headaches shoot behind the eye. If you felt that deep "hidden pain" when you hit the spot... congrats, that's the levator scapula waking up. Free this and your neck loosens, your shoulder blade drops, your posture shifts, and the pressure behind your eye finally releases. Try it — and tell me exactly where you felt it. A stretch that your neck will love! The levator scapulae, upper trapezius, paraspinals, and suboccipitals will be getting stretched with this lovely maneuver. Follow 👉@treatbackpain for daily pain relief tips! 📚 Follow 👉@treatbackpain for daily pain relief tips! 📚 Stretches on their own are often not the solution to eliminating the pain forever. In some instances, doing a single stretch can resolve the issue for a long time, however, for a majority of people a stretch offers temporary relief (a few minutes, a few hours, or a day), then the tightness comes back. This stretch can be helpful for providing you with some relief while you are working, driving for long periods, or to allow you to do the things that will ultimately make the biggest difference - strengthen and move. Sitting tall, reaching the top of your head to the ceiling, and gently pressing your hand into the front, sides, and back of your head while resisting movement is a great and safe place to start strengthening. Hold this for 5-30 seconds in each direction. Isometric exercises are generally a great place to start when there is pain. Doing this simple move each day can be a quick way to offer long-term neck pain relief. @the.shirtlessdude @drawing_anatomy @whealth #neckstretch #necktightness #neckflexibility #traptightness #tighttrap #neckmobility #neckstrength #headache #neckpain #neckache #cervicalpain #levatorscapulae #trapezius #paraspinals #heds #eds #hypermobility

❌This small muscle could be causing your neck and shoulder pain! (Get my step-by-step program in @theptinitiative profile link) — There is a small muscle that connects the shoulder blade to the neck, and can be really problematic if it gets overactive and tight. — It’s called the Levator Scapulae and it is a common source of neck pain and shoulder blade movement problems. — This muscle helps you elevate your shoulder blade, and bend your neck to the side, but can limit your ability to lift your arm overhead optimally if it’s restricted. — To begin fixing this issue I recommend doing this active Levator Scapulae release technique with a lacrosse ball to decrease the tonicity and tightness of this muscle. — Then we need to actively reinforce this new position by training scapular depression. This banded exercise is a great way to being learning this motion. — Need a detailed guide to bulletproof your shoulders? Neck pain here + shoulder blade ache here that stretching helps… but it always comes back? Comment “QUIZ” below for my Root Cause Quiz to figure out what’s actually driving your pain. 🧩 What’s really going on When you lift your arm, your shoulder blade should rotate up. When you lower it, it should rotate back down. But for a lot of people with neck pain, the muscles that pull the shoulder blade up stay overactive. That leaves the shoulder blade stuck in an upward position even at rest. You can actually check this: have someone take a photo of you from behind and see if one shoulder blade looks elevated compared to the other. ⚠️ Why this causes neck & shoulder blade pain 1️⃣ The tight muscles on top of the shoulder blade connect directly into the neck. When they stay tense, they compress and tug on the neck, making normal head movement uncomfortable. 2️⃣ The muscle along the inner shoulder blade gets overstretched because the blade never fully rotates down. Over time, that muscle becomes weak and achy. 💪 The fix: retrain shoulder blade movement Grab a band and pull it apart until it touches your chest. As you do this, actively squeeze your shoulder blades down and back and hold that position. While maintaining that squeeze, start gently rotating your head, tilting side to side, and looking up and down. 🔑 The key detail most people miss Before adding neck movement, make sure you’re truly pulling the shoulder blades down and back — not just pulling the band with your arms. This contracts the muscle that needs strengthening and automatically relaxes the overactive one that’s driving the neck pain. 🔁 Put it together Continue pulling the band apart while performing your neck movements. This builds real shoulder blade control. Many people notice their neck pain ease during the exercise itself. Fix the shoulder blade, and the neck often follows. The muscles of the neck are muscles that cover the area of the neck. These muscles are mainly responsible for the movement of the head in all directions. They consist of 3 main groups of muscles: anterior, lateral and posterior groups, based on their position in the neck. The musculature of the neck is further divided into more specific groups based on a number of determinants; including depth, precise location and function. The posterior aspect of the neck is covered by muscles that connect the skull to the spinal column and pectoral girdle. These muscles can be divided into three layers; Superficial layer: Trapezius, splenius capitis and splenius cervicis. Deep layer: cervical transversospinalis muscles (semispinalis capitis, semispinalis cervicis, multifidus cervicis) Deepest layer: suboccipital muscles, interspinales cervicis and intertransversarii colli muscles. Neck anatomy Every adolescent has heard at least once “don’t forget your head somewhere!” from their parents. Well, luckily, we have necks that attach our heads to our trunks, so joke’s on them for saying that. For instance, it supports the position of the head and enables us to turn our head towards stimuli. The content of the neck is grouped into 4 neck spaces, called the compartments. Vertebral compartment: contains cervical vertebrae and postural muscles. Visceral compartment: contains glands (thyroid, parathyroid, and thymus), the larynx, pharynx and trachea. Two vascular compartments: contain the common carotid artery, internal jugular vein and the vagus nerve, on each side of the neck. Protection of the parts of the neck and its mobility are ensured by the vertebrae and muscles of the neck. Why does an immobile scapula create shoulder pain? . To raise our arms high, the scapula needs to glide across the rib cage in a rotation-like motion. . This movement is primarily driven by the serratus anterior and opposed by the levator scapulae and rhomboid muscles. . The levator is a tonic muscle, meaning that if it's not exercised enough, it becomes overly tight. The rhomboids are generally content with this tightness because it makes their job easier. . Unfortunately, this compromises the movement of the scapula, and without it, our shoulder joint must operate in an exaggerated range of motion, which leads to pain. . . #anatomy #muscle #shoulderpain #scapula #scapularmobility #scapularstability #levatorscapulae #serratusanterior #rhomboidmajor #rhomboids #rhomboidminor #biomechanics
