Bu süreçte birey, sevdiği kişiyi idealize eder, sürekli olarak onun onayını arar ve düşüncelerinde bu kişiyle ilgili tekrarlayıcı, kontrolsüz bir meşguliyet yaşar.
Limerence’in temelinde, genellikle bağlanma sisteminin aşırı aktive olması yatar. Özellikle kaygılı bağlanma stiline sahip bireylerde, reddedilme korkusu ve onaylanma ihtiyacı bu döngüyü besler (Bartels & Zeki, 2000). Bu kişiler için romantik ilişki, yalnızca sevgi değil; aynı zamanda benlik değerinin onaylandığı, varoluşun anlam kazandığı bir alan haline gelir.
Nöropsikolojik açıdan limerence; dopamin, norepinefrin ve feniletilamin düzeylerindeki artışla ilişkilidir — tıpkı bağımlılıklarda görülen ödül mekanizmaları gibi. Bu nedenle kişi, sevilenin ilgisini bir “ödül” olarak algılar ve küçük bir geri bildirim bile güçlü bir duygusal yükselme yaratır (Fisher et al., 2002). Ancak bu sistem sürdürülemez hale geldiğinde, yoğun kaygı, boşluk hissi ve değersizlik duyguları devreye girer.
Psikodinamik açıdan bakıldığında limerence, çoğu zaman çocukluk dönemindeki duygusal yoksunlukların bir yeniden sahnelenmesidir. Erişilmesi güç bir figüre yönelmek, bireyin geçmişte alamadığı sevgi ve onayı bu yeni ilişki üzerinden telafi etme çabasını temsil eder (Johnson, 2019). Bu nedenle limerence, aşkın romantik bir biçimi olmaktan çok, bağlanma travmasının yeniden üretimi olarak da ele alınabilir.
