The math dance is a creative way to visualize how different algebraic equations create distinct geometric shapes. Linear functions: y = x and y = -x These are the simplest moves. For y = x, your arms form a diagonal line from the bottom-left to the top-right. This represents a constant 1-to-1 relationship. If you flip it to y = -x, your arms switch to a top-left to bottom-right diagonal. This shows a negative correlation: as x increases, y decreases at the exact same rate. The parabola: y = x² To dance a quadratic function, you curve both arms upward to form a U-shape, with your head at the center (the vertex). Because any number squared whether positive or negative results in a positive number, both sides of the graph stay above the horizontal axis. If the equation were y = -x², you would point your arms downward, creating a "frown" shape. The cubic function: y = x³ This move requires one arm to point up and the other to curve down. For y = x³, your right arm reaches up toward the sky while your left arm reaches down toward the ground, meeting at a slight curve in the middle. Unlike the parabola, the cubic function allows for negative results. When you cube a negative number, it stays negative, which is why the left side of your "dance" dives below the center line. The absolute value: y = |x| This is often called the V-shape. Similar to the parabola, the results are always positive, but instead of a smooth curve, the lines are perfectly straight. In the dance, your arms form a sharp V, meeting at a point. This represents the fact that the rate of change is constant, but the direction suddenly snaps at the origin.
