LMNT has a whopping 1,000 mg sodium per packet, which is nearly half the daily recommended limit of 2,300 mg. LMNT claims this limit is much too low and that we should really be targeting FOUR TO SIX thousand mg per day (what?!), to which they point to one study in support with many methodologic limitations, including inaccurate estimates of sodium intakes and reverse causation related to coexisting conditions.
But if we look at a more recent meta-analysis that addressed these issues, we see a significant linear relationship between sodium intake and cardiovascular risk.

Increasing sodium SHOULD NOT be a goal for most people. Nearly half of US adults have hypertension, a leading cause of death worldwide, for which high sodium consumption is a major contributor. So, pushing more sodium, and from a supplement, is completely NUTS.

*Note: This supplement could be very helpful for those with much higher sodium needs due to Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). In fact, it’s often recommended in many POTS forums.

This supplement really does it all doesn’t it, there must be something pretty special inside, right?
Nope. 🤷🏻♂️
It’s essentially table salt.
(that just costs $45…)
If you can get past the credible sponsors that are selling LMNT, and actually look at what’s inside - you start to understand that this is a marketing company, not a health company
The entire supplement is 80% sodium (salt), with just a *dash* of potassium & magnesium for a little ✨razzle dazzle✨
And is missing all of the other essential electrolytes we need in our diets (calcium, chloride, phosphate, & bicarbonate)
(I say a *dash* because it’s not nearly enough to have any impact with the amount of potassium & magnesium inside, about <5% of the potassium you would need in a day for example)
YES - we do lose salt when we sweat 💦✨
But NO - taking a supplement that is essentially saltwater won’t offer any performance, recovery, or other benefits beyond simply adding a pinch or two of salt to your pre- or post-workout meal 😕
Even if you train for 2+ hours a day (<1% of the population), a supplement with carbs or sugar would go 10X further for your performance and endurance than simply taking salt🧂❌
This is nothing against those who promote it, but more an important message to say just because someone with a big platform is selling you a product, doesn’t automatically mean it’s a QUALITY product
Some better formulated electrolyte supplements (still not necessary though:

- Gorilla

JHMAKING LMNT AT HOME - HOW MUCH CHEAPER IS IT?
LMNT is a very straight forward product and has very little besides the electrolytes in it. Per unit, each pack costs $1.50. But breaking down the components, it would cost significantly cheaper.
LMNT uses 1,000 sodium chloride, which is literally table salt. You probably already have it in your kitchen.
$0.005. Half a cent. That’s how much the sodium in LMNT would cost you in the exact form they use.
200mg potassium chloride would cost you $0.01.
And 20mg of magnesium would cost you about $0.028, so basically 3 cents.
4.5 cents. That’s how much the electrolytes cost in LMNT.
Of course you’re paying for not having to do the work, the flavoring, and the convenient packaging.

THI’ve been meaning to jump on this homemade LMNT electrolyte drink mix train for a while now and finally tried it! Holy cow that was delicious (and super simple).
If there’s one thing I’ve really dropped the ball on this pregnancy, it’s hydration. Plain water just isn’t doing it for me, so this is going to change the game. Plus it comes out to a whopping $0.27/serving ($0.06 without the flavoring), compared to a typical LMNT pack which costs $1.50-$2 per stick.
Here are the deets ⬇️
(30 servings)
🔹Table salt- 75g
🔸Potassium chloride- 11.5g
🔹Magnesium malate- 11.7g
🔸Flavoring of choice- (to taste)
*1 serving = 3.2g
I chose True Lemon packets for my sweetener which came in individual sticks, but you can use anything! I’ll definitely be trying out several flavors.

So the moment my 18 month old started vomiting, I mixed up a cup of electrolyte water to keep her hydrated as we wait out the 🦠.

Electrolyte water is superior to regular water at replacing key minerals and keeping kids and adults hydrated. Less is needed to do the job which is important when your little one can’t take but so much on their belly.
Good electrolyte mix can be hard to come by as many contain a ton of sugar (which hurts upset bellies) and a high dose of artificial dyes. It truly only needs 5 ingredients- sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium and a small amount of glucose.
If you’ve made it this far I’m sure you can guess whether or not I buy Gatorade for my kids 🤣
My favorite electrolyte mix (for myself and my girls) is LMNT. Avery loves the watermelon flavor (almost as much as she loves drinking from my cup!). So today that’s what I’ve mixed up for her. And I’m encouraging small sips.
