Ever wonder how your lungs work? This viral video illustrates it perfectly! In the video, sucking air through a straw lowers pressure inside the jar, creating negative pressure that inflates the balloon 🎈. Your lungs 🫁 work similarly: when the diaphragm contracts, it descends ⬇️, increasing the thoracic cavity’s volume ⬆️. Simultaneously, the external intercostal muscles contract, elevating the ribs to further expand the chest cavity. This increased volume reduces intrapleural pressure (negative relative to atmospheric pressure), enabling the lungs to expand and draw in air like the balloon. The brainstem’s respiratory centers, located in the medulla oblongata and pons, regulates this process of breathing by sensing blood carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels and pH changes, sending signals via the phrenic nerve to the diaphragm to and intercostal nerves to the intercostal muscles. 👉🏻 Comment 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗠 below for 4 proven breathing exercises to reduce stress, ease anxiety, and sleep better. MEDULLA OBLONGATA is a continuation of the superior aspect of the spinal cord. It appears visually as the superior expansion of the spinal cord and therefore forms the inferior portion of the brainstem. Many cranial nerves arise from the medulla, and it also contains centers that control cardiovascular and respiratory function (heart rate and breathing), as well as controls reflexes such as coughing, sneezing, and vomiting. . . #instituteofhumananatomy #anatomy #anatomylab #anatomyclass #cadaver #cadavers #cadaverlab #learninganatomy #learnanatomy #physiology #physiologyclass #biology #biologyclass #science #scienceclass #learn #learning #brain #bigbrain #nervous #nervoussystem #neuroscience #neuro #medulla #medullaoblongata #adamsandler #waterboy #alligator #heartrate #breathing

Key Brain Structures and Functions Cerebrum (Largest part): Responsible for higher-level functions, including thought, memory, emotion, and action. Frontal Lobe: Involved in reasoning, planning, personality, decision-making, and voluntary movement. Contains Broca’s area for speech. Parietal Lobe: Processes sensory information regarding touch, temperature, pressure, and pain. Temporal Lobe: Manages auditory processing, language comprehension, and memory formation. Occipital Lobe: Responsible for visual processing, including shape and color recognition. Cerebellum (“Little Brain”): Located at the back of the brain, it controls coordination, precision, balance, and motor learning. Brainstem (Connects to spinal cord): Controls autonomic, involuntary functions necessary for survival, such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and swallowing. Midbrain: Manages visual and auditory reflexes. Pons: Regulates breathing and controls sleep cycles. Medulla Oblongata: Controls vital reflexes like sneezing, coughing, and swallowing. Other Key Structures: Thalamus: Relays sensory and motor signals to the cortex and manages consciousness. Hypothalamus: Regulates body temperature, emotions, hunger, thirst, and hormone production via the pituitary gland. Limbic System: Involved in processing emotions and memory. #drvibha #carehospitals #rehabilitation #physiotherapy #brain

@bradley_blair_osteopath
The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and the longest cranial nerve in the body. It originates in the medulla oblongata of the brainstem and travels through the neck into the thorax and abdomen, providing extensive parasympathetic innervation to multiple organ systems. It is a mixed nerve containing both sensory and motor fibres. Approximately eighty percent of its fibres are afferent, carrying sensory information from the body back to the brain, while the remaining fibres are efferent and contribute to motor and parasympathetic control of organs. The vagus nerve plays a major role in autonomic regulation, particularly in reducing heart rate, supporting bronchoconstriction, and promoting gastrointestinal motility and secretion. Through this parasympathetic influence, it is heavily involved in what is often described as “rest and digest” physiology. In the neck, the vagus nerve travels within the carotid sheath alongside the internal jugular vein and common carotid artery. In the thorax, it contributes to the cardiac and pulmonary plexuses, and in the abdomen it supplies much of the gastrointestinal tract up to the proximal two-thirds of the transverse colon. Sensory input carried by the vagus nerve includes information from thoracic and abdominal viscera, as well as contributions to sensation from parts of the larynx and pharynx. It also plays a role in reflexes such as coughing, swallowing, gagging, and vomiting. Animation @xavork
