💚Let’s decode a multisyllabic word! 💚Watch to see how easy it is to break apart a multisyllabic word with a magic e! 💚 The students realize the importance of breaking words into syllables…decoding each part one at a time…then reading the entire multisyllabic word! I have seen the same student that would SKIP a multisyllabic word at the beginning of the year, successfully DECODE a 4- syllable word with ease and confidence. 💚After consistent practice with post-its or on our “syllaboards”, the students begin doing it automatically when they read! 👏 💚Check out my bio for a free download and more info! 👆🏼 #scienceofreading #decodingwords #readingtips #readingtools #syllablication

🥳 Let’s celebrate schwa: the most common vowel sound in English! Say SCHWA below if you would like the vowel mat I showed in the video. 🤔 What is a schwa? 😴 Schwa is a lazy vowel sound you hear in the unstressed syllable of multisyllabic words. The symbol for schwa is the upside down e! 🍌 banana /buh/ /nan/ /uh/ /bəˈnæn.ə/ See those upside down e’s?! That’s schwa! If you missed National Schwa Day, don’t worry! You can celebrate all week. 🎉 #scienceofreading #scienceofreadinginstruction #readingisfundamental #readingisaright #literacymatters #kindergartenteacher #firstgradeteacher #secondgradeteacher #homeschool #teachermom #learntoread #phonics #phonemicawareness #schwa #nationalschwaday

Syllable division knowledge is a great help when students are diving into multisyllabic words. It’s interesting how some kids pick it up quickly and others just need a little bit more TLC. Syllable knowledge can really help with more accurate reading and spelling. #iloveteaching #teach #smart #learn #fyp #dyslexia #syllabledivision #syllables #newteacher

Why teach syllabication?! ⬇️⁣ ⁣ Yesterday I watched a third grader easily and correctly divide the syllables in a multisyllabic word. But then, she asked me what the word was. I went on to explain to her… that that’s the whole point! ⁣ ⁣ If students understand how to divide syllables, it allows them to divide unknown multisyllabic words into more manageable parts that they can decode and blend. This is empowering and improves students’ reading confidence as they begin reading more complex texts.⁣ ⁣ Explicitly teaching syllable types and having students practice syllable division can also improve vocabulary, spelling, and reading fluency. ⁣ ⁣ This particular list that I used in this video was a random assortment from a 2nd grade list that I’m working on. However, when I teach syllabication to students, I prefer to use words that they will encounter soon in upcoming texts or even in content areas like math or science. ⁣ ⁣ Thoughts?! ⬇️ ⁣ ⁣ #vocabulary #morphology #phonics #sor #scienceofreading #secondgrade #thirdgrade #2ndgrade #3rdgrade #litcoach #readingteacher #teachergram

Did you know that word sums can transform the way students learn to read and spell longer, more complex multisyllabic words…? Word sums help students see and understand how words are really built - one meaningful unit at a time! When students learn how to build words, they train their brains to notice individual morphemes - prefixes, base elements, and suffixes… PLUS spelling patterns that make reading and spelling really click! Word sums: ✅ Build spelling memory ✅ Strengthen orthographic mapping and thinking ✅ Support decoding, encoding, and vocabulary growth Start using word sums in your classroom or at home from the earliest stages of spelling instruction. You’ll be amazed by the results! Want to learn more about the REAL structures of English spelling..? ❓Have you ever found yourself desperately googling words for dictation? It seems so easy to find single-syllable words that match what I needed, but multisyllabic words were always outside my reach. 📖That’s why I’ve created 26 dictation word lists organized according to syllable type. 😍There are lists for all of the syllable types: open, closed, magic e, r-controlled vowels, vowel teams, consonant + le. Even better? The lists start with single syllable words, then move into 2, 3, and 4 syllable words featuring the patterns you’ve taught. ❗If you’re a teacher that teaches the syllable types, I’m telling you these lists will make your life SO. MUCH. EASIER. 👇Comment “lists” below and I’ll DM the 🔗to snag them! #syllabletypes #teachingreading #readingteacher #multisyllabic

⬇️ Comment BUNDLE and I’ll send the link so you can check these out! If you’re on the fence, keep reading. Do your students need more practice decoding longer words? These are designed for students who need more scaffolded practice to build accuracy, fluency, and confidence reading multisyllabic words. Just print and go. Students read each word one syllable or morpheme at a time, then read the whole word for automaticity. Two pages per skill, progressing from easier to more complex. I’ve also created a Mega Blending Mats Bundle that includes these plus all of my successive blending mats in one place. This mega bundle will be 15$ for the next 24 hours. So grab it now while you can! And if you’re doubting it, see what one educator said about my successive blending mats: “Hands down, this was one of the best tools in my intervention arsenal this year. I placed the sheets in a binder and I or my aide could easily pick it up work with a student to target skill deficits. I will utilize this resource again and again for years to come.” ⬇️ Comment BUNDLE and I’ll send you the link to both. #phonics #sciencereading #literacyteacher #readingintervention #multisyllabicwords earlyliteracy teacherresources smallgroupinstruction
