Hi there 👋 If you struggle with anxious attachment, this is for you. If you feel anxious in your romantic partnerships, or anxiety around relationships, you may have an anxious attachment style. Which really means that your foundational, early attachment years, usually between the ages of 0-4, you had a parent that was inconsistent or intermittently available, and there was lack of consistency, or predictability around how or when you might get love, attention or your emotional needs met. This influences your nervous system to take over and begin to pursue your caretakers, so that you can get your needs met. If your attempts at pursuing, getting your needs met or getting the love and attention you needed were met with rejection, annoyance, resistance, shaming or punishment, you may have a more complicated attachment style… Either way, know this is something that can happen whether or not your parents have the best intentions for you and whether or not you believe you had “good” parents. One of the very best things that you can do for yourself is to take the pressure and shame off of yourself for feeling how you feel. It is quite normal, quite common to feel shame around your anxious attachment style. It is quite normal to have self judgment or self criticism around your neediness or feeling like you’re too much. But, what you can do is to begin to recognize that this is just how your bonding happened. This is your nervous system’s relationship to relationships. Once you understand that and you remove the stigma and shame around your own attachment style, then it’s much easier to help and move into a more solution-focused, results-based approach. While meditation can be a helpful tool for stress relief and relaxation, it's possible that overdoing it may lead to increased anxiety or a sense of being disconnected from reality. I myself have struggled with health anxiety issues- whereby I tried to convince myself “everything is ok” but you know what happened? I found myself in HOURS long spirals- obsessing, letting it go for a minute, obsessing again, sort of letting it go, but then obsessing again. GAAAAAHHHhhhHHHhhh So frustrating. Logic and reassurance DO NOT heal anxiety. But true emotional processing DOES. Those are the keys to this DBT distress tolerance exercise! 📎 Make sure to save 💾 this so you can come back to it when you need it. ➡️ Here's what you're going to do... *DISTRACT YOURSELF BY COUNTING* Examples: - Count how many items in the room are the same color (in this reel, all three items have blue in them). - Count how many times you hear someone say a word (any word, you pick). - Count your breath. - Count numbers (but make it tricky, so maybe count by increments of 7). ✨️ Instead of obsessing over the text, getting yourself more anxious, remaining stuck in your thoughts, and finding yourself unable to do anything else, this will allow you to move out of that moment. Once the emotion no longer has a strong hold over you then you're able to get on with your day and return to the situation when you can think clearer (and maybe when the other person is ready to talk about it, also).
