These might sound like odd rules… but they’re the reason I’m no longer a survival mode mom. Trust me - SAVE this list! ✨ When I feel myself getting snappy, I hum, sigh loudly, or shake out my arms. Regulation first! ✨ When everything feels urgent, I sit down on purpose and slow my movements.Rushing tells my body we’re in danger. We’re not. ✨ I don’t skip meals and then wonder why I’m moody. Low blood sugar looks like anger, impatience, and overwhelm. Food is nervous system support. Eat first. Bad moods are often unmet physical needs. ✨I don’t hold myself to pre-mom standards. I’m not the same person and that’s allowed. Different season. Different capacity. ✨ I don’t rush mornings on purpose. Starting the day in chaos sets the tone for everything that follows. My nervous system needs a soft launch. ✨ I pause before saying yes… even to small things. Automatic yeses drain my capacity fast. This protects my energy. ✨I eat before I help anyone else. Being nourished makes me a better mom. ✨ I don’t push through exhaustion just to finish. Finishing isn’t worth the crash that follows. Rest is how I break the burnout cycle. ✨ If I feel ragey, I move my body. Stored stress needs physical release, not suppression. ✨ I go to bed by 9:30/10pm. Because tired moms aren’t patient or kind… and sleep is non-negotiable nervous system care. ✨I don’t ask “what’s wrong with me?” I ask, “What do I need right now?” Very different nervous system response. ✨I stop scrolling when I feel more behind than inspired. Comparison sends my nervous system into threat. ✨ I lower the bar on hard days without guilt. Bare minimum is enough when you’re burnt out. ✨And I let myself feel annoyed without making it mean anything about me. Feelings are signals, not character flaws. These rules aren’t about doing more. They’re about supporting a nervous system that’s been carrying too much for too long. If you’re done living in survival mode & want to feel calmer, steadier, and more present again… comment BALANCED and I’ll send you some things that will help!🤍 Share this with your survival mode mom friends. 💕 #survivalmodemom #momlife #momwellness #survivalmode #stressedmom

You weren’t “too emotional.” You were overworked, unseen, and on the edge of losing yourself in a one-sided relationship. You weren’t asking for too much. You were begging to not carry it all alone. And when you finally broke… he blamed the explosion, not the years he spent lighting the fuse. If this hit something in your chest— Read my book, A Woman’s Path to Freedom. It’s for every woman who was told she was “too much” while silently carrying the weight of everything. Grab your copy on Amazon. Have you seen this dynamic? In the newest episode of the Heal Through Humor Podcast, Talia interviews Dr. Ashley Southard discuss the concept of the over-functioning woman and her under-functioning partner in love relationships. Sometimes this can look like a parent child relationship more than two adults in secure functioning relationship. #overfunctioningwoman #selfhelp #codependency #womensempowerment #overfunctioning #healingjourney #selflove #selfawareness #selfgrowth

You handled the emails. The snacks. The schedules. The meltdowns. You were calm. Capable. On it. And then one tiny inconvenience happens and suddenly you are in your own hallway meltdown. Therapy truth: High achieving moms get praised for being capable, not supported for being human. So you over-function. You do not ask for help. You hold it together. Until your nervous system says absolutely not. Support is not a reward for burnout. You are allowed to need help before you fall apart. #HighAchievingMom #Overfunctioning #EmotionallyExhausted #TherapyForWomen #NervousSystemCare

Over functioning is a trauma response, it’s a nervous system setting. But there is something you can do about it: It’s not always easy, but it’s simple: get back in your body. Breathe, ground through your feet, do a body scan. You have to practice showing your nervous system that rest is safe. Somewhere along the line your inner system experienced that rest and slowness didn’t work out well. Now is your chance to provide a corrective experience. It may take a little time, be patient with yourself. Here’s the response to a prior video you asked for. I hope it helps! #burnoutrecovery #nervoussystemregulation #nervoussystemhealing #traumaresponse #overfunctioning #overfunctioningwoman #overfunctioner #slowdown #justbreathe

Confusing patience with self-betrayal. When repeated hurt teaches you that endurance equals strength, your nervous system adapts by shrinking instead of responding. EFT helps gently interrupt that pattern and restore clarity. This tapping is for gentle nervous-system support and educational purposes only — not trauma processing, therapy, or a substitute for professional care. Go slowly and honor what feels safe for you. Did this help? You can show your appreciation through the link in my bio 🙏🏻❤️ #EFT #NervousSystemRegulation #AttachmentPatterns #SelfRespect #OverFunctioning

Sometimes “I’m fine” really means “I don’t know how to not do this alone” 👇🏻 When you’ve spent years being the one who holds everything together, the idea of needing support can feel unfamiliar… even uncomfortable. Hyper-independence is usually a response to upbringing, not a personality trait. It can look like being the “strong one,” the planner, the one who anticipates everything.
Internally however, it often feels like anxiety, resentment, disconnection from your own needs and the quiet fear that if you stop…everything might fall apart. At LiteMinded, we help clients untangle these patterns - so they can reconnect with their needs, not just their roles. If this resonates, reach out through the link in bio. We are accepting new clients in NYC! 🫶🏻 . . . #overfunctioning #burnout  #nervoussystemhealing #cptsd #hyperindependence #traumahealing #traumarecovery #highfunctioninganxiety

Over-functioning isn’t a personality trait—it’s a survival response. For those of us who grew up parentified, taking care of others became second nature because we had no choice. As siblings, we stepped into roles we weren’t meant to fill, learning to anticipate needs, manage chaos, and ignore our own needs. Now, as adults, that over-functioning can look like constant productivity, people-pleasing, or feeling responsible for everyone’s happiness. Often times, when we are back with our family of origin we feel ourselves slipping back into these roles even when no one has asked us to because deep down we feel it is a role we need to have in order to feel loved. And it goes even deeper than that, our younger parts are absolutely terrified that if we don’t over-function the people we love won’t be ok. As a parentified older sibling, I’ve had to be super intentional at setting boundaries for myself and recognizing when these patterns begin to show up with my family members. I’ve also had to be intentional with soothing little me. Letting her know that should have never been her job and the people she love will be okay if she steps back. Healing means learning that your worth isn’t tied to what you do for others—it’s inherent, just because you are. . . After years (decades?) of 🤍 Over-accommodating their selfishness 🤍 Over-forgiving their immaturity 🤍 Overlooking their Underfunctioning …you’re OVER it! Your patience has run out and you can’t take anymore nonsense. 🤷‍♀️ Now, they’re offended, blind-sided, and the ultimate victim of your “mean” and “cold-hearted” ways. 🙋‍♂️ If you’re an Overfunctioning Woman, their accusations are your kryptonite…pulling you back in to proving to them that you’re not these things, and wasting your precious energy trying to help them understand where you’re coming from. But we’re not doing that anymore. 🙅‍♀️ Underfunctioning Partners are committed to being the victim, which means it doesn’t really matter if you’re patient or not, empathic or not. No matter how you show up for them, guaranteed you will still be in the wrong. So save your breath and spare your sanity. And understand that you are being Self-Respecting by finally putting some limits around your engagement with their nonsense. This is your permission slip to step back from caring about everything they’re thinking and feeling, and start tending more to what you’re thinking and feeling. They’ll cry victim no matter what, so you might as well take good care of care of you! ❤️‍🩹 This isn’t mean. ❤️‍🩹 This isn’t selfish. It’s just interrupting the comfort they have sat in while you ran in circles to keep them comfortable. Disengaging from their nonsense is a powerful step in your healing. 🔥 xoxo ~ Dr. Ashley 💞 🦋 Want support with stepping back and letting them be the victim? This is exactly what we do inside The Self-Restoration Community. 👉 Comment ‘SISTERHOOD’ and I’ll send you a link with more info. #womensupportingwomen #overfunctioning #relationshipadvice
