Living with PCOS Tips! I’m introducing a new series where I talk about tips that have helped me while living with PCOS! First up, let’s talk omega 3 supplementation! There have been so many studies that have shown that omega 3 supplementation can help PCOS patients: 📌 Reduce insulin resistance 📌 Reduce weight gain 📌 Decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride levels 📌 Increase HDL levels (the good cholesterol!) 📌 Decrease testosterone levels 📌 Decrease risk of hirsutism 📌 Decrease inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and malondialdehyde 📌 Increase in antioxidants such as glutathione 📌 Improve depression, anxiety, and stress levels 📌 And as of 2023, improve pregnancy rates! Options include consumption through diet with foods such as foods such as salmon, chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, etc., or supplementing with tablets containing fish oil, flaxseed oil, and/or linseed oil, etc. Ideal dosing is 1500-3000 mg per day. This is definitely something you and your OBGYN and PCOS care team should consider for you! The first things I started noticing were: • Irregular periods • Facial hair • Puffy / moon face • Bald patches & hair fall Then slowly more symptoms started showing up that I never paid attention to- • Sugar cravings after every meal • Feeling depressed or dizzy for no reason • Couldn’t sleep even when I was tired • Excess hair on face, chin & body • Dark patches on neck or underarms • Acne on jawline, chest or back • Extreme fatigue even after sleeping • Constant bloating • Mood swings and irritability • Brain fog / difficulty concentrating • Feeling hungry again right after eating • Low energy throughout the day • Hair thinning on scalp • Skin tags around neck or underarms • Very painful periods • Missing periods for months • Difficulty losing weight even with diet • Weight gain that wouldn’t go away If you are struggling with these symptoms, please get your blood work done first. I told myself the exhaustion was normal. That the weight gain was just a discipline issue. That irregular my cycles were “just how my body works” and “I’m overweight so I just need to accept it.” That the brain fog, cravings and inflammation were something I had to live with. They weren’t. PCOS affects hormones and insulin. Because my insulin wasn’t supported, it was driving up my weight gain, disrupting ovulation, impact my hair and skin, my energy and my mood. My body wasn’t failing me. It was overwhelmed. This is what I stopped ignoring: • Constant fatigue • Blood sugar crashes and intense cravings • Irregular or missing ovulation • Inflammation in my face and throughout my body • Mental fog and mood swings Instead of beating myself up, I started supporting my hormones. Balanced meals with protein and fibre. Less stress. Regular movement that supported my body. Better sleep. Learning my cycle. Taking magnesium and Inositol. The “after” benefits weren’t just weight loss (which helps everything else too by the way).
