My biggest insecurity: 7 years ago, I felt small in T shirts. I wanted to change that and build my dream physique. To me, that meant a large chest. I tried spamming thousands of push ups and 4x12 on bench press. It definitely built me some muscle, but not enough. So I locked in on researching bodybuilding. These are the 3 science-based things I changed that transformed my chest gains: 1. 2 sets per exercise, 2-4 (usually 3) exercises for chest. Sometimes I even hit just 1 set to failure of an exercise. You don’t need a million sets. 2. Hit your compound lifts (for me this is the machine chest press and the incline smith machine) and then the isolation movements (chest flyes) 3. Maximum intensity. Every set to failure. Some cheat reps + partials to ensure you can’t complete any more reps. The pectoralis major is a thick, fan-shaped muscle that makes up the bulk of the chest. It has two heads: The clavicular head originates from the medial half of the clavicle. The sternocostal head originates from the sternum, the upper six costal cartilages, and the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle. Both heads insert onto the lateral lip of the bicipital groove (intertubercular sulcus) of the humerus. Functionally, it’s involved in adduction, medial rotation, and flexion of the humerus. The clavicular head contributes more to flexion, while the sternocostal head assists in extension of the flexed arm, especially during actions like pushing. Tension lines typically run from the sternum and clavicle diagonally toward the humerus, reflecting the muscle’s fibre orientation. Tension is often felt across the front of the shoulder and chest, particularly with overuse in pressing movements or when the arm is habitually positioned forward. Restriction can limit horizontal abduction and shoulder external rotation. I tested this using EMG by tracking peak activation on every rep for three muscles: • Lower pectoralis major • Triceps long head • Anterior deltoid Instead of comparing raw signal (which favors larger muscles), I normalized each muscle to its own peak activation ✍🏻 This shows how hard each muscle is working relative to its own capacity — rep after rep ✅ Results (averaged across multiple sets): • Lower pec ~ 81% • Triceps long head ~ 75% • Anterior delt ~ 71% That means during forward-lean dips, the lower chest consistently operates closest to its own maximum, more than the triceps or shoulders do ☝🏻 Important context: This doesn’t make dips a lower-chest isolation exercise 🚨 They’re still a compound press 👍🏻 But leaning forward does meaningfully bias the lower pec when compared on a per-muscle basis 🫡 - Contribution 🚫 isolation - Bias 🚫 dominance 💯 But the bias here is measurable and repeatable #personaltrainer #fitness #gym #bodybuilding #follow
