Intake Stroke (Leftmost cylinder) The piston moves downward. The intake valve opens, allowing a mixture of air and fuel to enter the cylinder. Represented by the blue arrow in the picture. ๐Ÿ”น 2. Compression Stroke (Second cylinder) The piston moves upward. Both intake and exhaust valves are closed. The air-fuel mixture is compressed, which increases its pressure and temperature. Represented by the upward arrow. ๐Ÿ”น 3. Power Stroke (Third cylinder) At the top of the compression stroke, a spark plug ignites (in petrol engines) or high compression causes self-ignition (in diesel engines). The explosion of the fuel-air mixture forces the piston downward. This is the only stroke that produces power to move the vehicle. Represented by the flame and downward arrow. ๐Ÿ”น 4. Exhaust Stroke (Rightmost cylinder) The piston moves upward again. The exhaust valve opens, pushing out burnt gases (smoke). Represented by the grey smoke. โš™๏ธ Summary Intake โ†’ Compression โ†’ Power โ†’ Exhaust This cycle keeps repeating thousands of times per minute, making the crankshaft rotate and providing power to the wheels. Out of the four strokes, only the power stroke produces usable energy; the other three prepare the process.
