The radius is the lateral bone of the forearm and is homologous to the medial bone of the leg, the tibia ANATOMICAL POSITION AND SIDE DETERMINATION The side of radius can be determined by keeping the bone vertically in such a way that: 1. The narrow disc-shaped end (head) is directed upwards. 2. The sharpest border (interosseous border) of the shaft is kept medially. 3. The styloid process at the lower end is directed laterally and prominent tubercle (Lister’s tubercle) at lower end faces dorsally. 4. The convexity of shaft faces laterally, and concave anterior surface of shaft faces anteriorly.

The radius and ulna are long bones that make up the forearm, extending from the elbow to the wrist. In the anatomical position, the radius is found in the lateral forearm, while the ulna is found in the medial forearm. The radius is shorter than the ulna and has a small proximal end that articulates with the humerus, and a broad distal end that articulates with the carpal bones at the wrist. Compared to the radius, the dimensions of the ulna are reversed because it has a large proximal end which articulates with the humerus and a small distal end. The design of the radius and ulna as well as the joints between them enable pronation and supination of the forearm and hand. Both bones participate in joints and provide surfaces for the attachment of several upper limb muscles which control the various movements of the upper limb. Thus, they are essential for the proper mobility of the upper extremity. Did you know that our forearm bones are sometimes parallel and sometimes crossed? . Your forearm consists of two bones: the ulna and the radius. When you want to place your hand palm down, the radius actually rotates around the ulna. This movement is called pronation and is governed by the pronator teres and pronator quadratus muscles. Meanwhile, another muscle, the supinator, wraps around the radius, which later allows for the opposite movement, called supination. . It runs parallel to the ulna, the other forearm bone. . . Proximal End (Near the Elbow): Head of the Radius: A disc-shaped structure that articulates with the capitulum of the humerus and the radial notch of the ulna. Neck: Just below the head, it supports the head and allows for movement. Radial Tuberosity: A bony projection below the neck, where the biceps brachii tendon inserts. 2. Shaft (Body): Slightly curved, with a triangular cross-section. Has three borders (anterior, posterior, interosseous) and three surfaces (anterior, posterior, lateral). 3. Distal End (Near the Wrist): Styloid Process: A pointed projection on the lateral side. Ulnar Notch: Articulates with the head of the ulna. Distal Articular Surface: Forms part of the radiocarpal joint (wrist joint) and articulates with the scaphoid and lunate bones. FUNCTIONS Allows pronation and supination of the forearm (rotation of the hand). Transfers forces from the hand to the upper arm. Plays a key role in wrist and elbow joint function. CLINICAL NOTES: Common site of injury in falls (e.g., Colles’ fracture, a break in the distal radius). Fractures often occur with wrist hyperextension or direct trauma.

The forearm or antebrachium is a part of the upper limb that extends between the elbow and the wrist joints. It consists of two bones known as the radius and the ulna. The radius is shorter and smaller than the ulna and is found on the lateral (thumb) side.💡 The structures of the radius and their articulations with the humerus and ulna permit the forearm and hand to perform such movements as supination and pronation. Supination and pronation occur through complex articulations with the radial head.😎 The arrangement of the upper arm and forearm bones allows the radial head to rotate proximally, causing anteromedial movement of the distal radius. The distal radius crosses over the distal aspect of the ulna, allowing the hand and wrist to pronate. An opposite movement is called supination.🦾 Learn human anatomy fast!
