It’s using your shoulders, and there is no need for that on the return. For sprints, yes, your hands have to go more “straight in and out”. But for long rows? Try this instead: ✅ Relax your arms down and out. No shoulder tension, keeping the handle low to the thighs ✅ As soon as the handle passes your knees, bend them, and slowly ✨ trickle ✨ your hands upwards to the catch. Burn more calories on the rower by SLOWING DOWN! For those that aren’t experienced with using a rowing machine properly, they think that faster = more calories. The “speed” of your rowing, aka the “stroke rate” is simply a measure of the rhythm of how many strokes you’re taking in… NOT HOW HARD YOU ARE TAKING STROKES! To make rowing burn a lot of calories and actually feel like a good workout, you need to take strokes HARDER, and NOT row “faster”! Rowing machines generate resistance based on how much EFFORT goes into the drive of each stroke. You could have a stroke rate of 30 strokes per minute, but if you’re not putting EFFORT into each stroke, you’re doing a whole lot of NOTHING! Hence the 700 calories per hour that happens when I just bounce up and down with no actual effort. By slowing your stroke rate / rhythm down, you can actually get a better workout on the rower because you can focus on your form, but more importantly, putting more EFFORT into each stroke! That’s why you can see that at 20 strokes per minute, I can burn 2 times as many calories because I’m actually TRYING HARD each stroke - even though the rate is lower! Can you generate even more by rowing hard AND using a high stroke rate? Absolutely! But you can’t row well at a fast stroke rate until you learn how to row well at a low stroke rate, first! Start rowing SLOW if you ACTUALLY want to start getting in a good workout on the rower! 💪 Questions? Ask them! I found this the hard way competing in both @athx_games & @hyroxuk events last year where I physically burnt myself out through inefficient technique, impacting on my overall performance. Thankfully after attending @hall_strength ERG seminar last Summer, and spending a lot more time on the fundamentals, my rowing efficiency has progressed massively, preventing me from gassing out during workouts and stay efficient throughout my HYROX and ATHX races.
