Does this sound like what you experience? If yes, you’re not alone!! Sensory sensitivity (hypersensitivity) is very common and not often talked about! For me: certain areas of my skin would crawl when being touched, vision changes would happen frequently, and I found normal sounds to be so so loud. If you’re experiencing this, remember to seek professional help 💕 #anxiety #anxious #sensitivity #health #support #tips

These are “little” on the outside — but not to the nervous system: • Someone staying over → sounds casual, but for an HSP, it’s an energetic + sensory invasion • Construction at home → “it’s just some noise” to others, but constant unpredictability = huge stressor • Small talk before coffee → socially expected, but hard for HSPs before emotional/physical regulation • Perfume/detergent scents → invisible to most, but overstimulating to someone with sensory sensitivity • A dramatic show at night → “it’s just a show,” but for HSPs, emotional processing continues well after • Being asked ‘what’s wrong?’ → a “caring” question, but can create pressure to perform or fix • Unspoken tension in a room → often dismissed or unnoticed by others • Background noises → most people tune them out; HSPs rarely can • Picking up on someone’s mood → “imagined” to others, but deeply felt by HSPs • Touch without warning → often seen as affection, but jarring if you’re already overstimulated Follow @emilymacleodwellness for the kind of HSP support that actually helps—nervous system tools, somatic shifts, and content that reminds you you’re not ‘too much’—you’re just wired deeply.

Sensory Processing explained in (almost) less than 60 seconds 👏🏼 **but in reality - the sensory systems are VERY complex and intricate and vary from person to person! If you have concerns about your child’s ability to interpret & process sensory input, drop your questions below ⬇️ + it’s always important to work directly with an occupational therapist who can learn your child’s background and specific unique needs and preferences to help guide you! 🤍 💡 Signs your child might be struggling in different sensory areas: • frequent long, intense, meltdowns • extreme selective eater • avoids playground equipment • excessive unsafe seeking of pressure/movement/spinning/jumping • just to point out a few!! #SPD #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryissues #occupationaltherapist

Here’s one sensory red flag I wish everyone knew wasn’t ‘normal.’ Kids should not be chewing on their shirts, sleeves, pencils and hair to the point of ruining them and having drenched clothes. When a child chews on things this much, it’s a sign of sensory disorganization. The proprioceptive system is craving more deep pressure, the tactile system is craving more input, the nervous system is anxious, there’s reflexes retained, etc etc. Helping children meet their sensory threshold through big body movements, heavy work, and resistive input to the jaw. Addressing nervous system disorganization through primitive reflex integration, sensory integration, therapeutic music, and deep pressure brushing are all tools that can help. Is this something you see with your clients, students or your own kids?? ⤵️ #sensationalbrain #sensory #redflag #occupationaltherapy #pediot #sensoryinput #sensoryseeker #therapistsofinstagram #schoolbasedot #highlysensitive

💥 What looks like “just being chill” might actually be hyposensitivity — the lesser-known side of autism’s sensory spectrum. While many people talk about sensory overload, some autistic people experience the opposite: a muted or under-reactive response to sensory input. ❤️‍🩹 Hyposensitivity isn’t about “not caring” or “being lazy” — it’s how the nervous system processes sensation differently. Here are 6 things people with autism think are normal — but are actually signs of hyposensitivity: 1️⃣ Not noticing pain or temperature changes right away 👉 You might realize you’re hurt or cold long after it happens — your body takes longer to register discomfort. 2️⃣ Seeking out deep pressure or intense sensations 👉 Tight hugs, weighted blankets, or rough textures aren’t random preferences — they help your body feel grounded. 3️⃣ Craving loud music or strong vibrations 👉 It’s not “too much” — your brain may need extra stimulation to feel regulated. 4️⃣ Appearing clumsy or unaware of body position 👉 Hyposensitivity to proprioception (body awareness) can make coordination more difficult. 5️⃣ Touching or fidgeting constantly 👉 You’re not restless — your body’s trying to increase sensory input to stay connected and alert. 6️⃣ Missing subtle sounds, smells, or visual cues 👉 You’re not inattentive — your brain filters sensory data differently, sometimes tuning too much out. ❤️‍🩹 My Final Thought: Hyposensitivity doesn’t make you “less autistic” — it’s simply another way your nervous system experiences the world. Understanding it helps you meet your body’s sensory needs with compassion, not judgment. ❤️‍🩹 If this resonates, comment “Sensory” and follow for more autism insights. #autismacceptance #neurodivergent #hyposensitivity #sensoryprocessing #autism #healingjourney #mentalhealth

You might secretly be a HSP… 💕 As a highly sensitive person, I’ve started to notice the little quirks I do in public that I used to think were just me being weird turns out, they were signs of my sensitivity & did not mean I was ‘just’ anxious. Here are some habits that might actually mean you’re a HSP: • Always choosing the corner seat in restaurants because it feels safer. • Wearing headphones while out to block out overwhelming noise. • Scrolling your phone to avoid eye contact – an act of energy protection. • Fidgeting with jewellery or your clothes – a subtle way to self-soothe. • Leaving events early without saying goodbye you’ve absorbed too much energy. • Flinching at sudden noise, crowds or chaos your system is on high alert. • Tripping over things or feeling clumsy from overstimulation or the sense of being watched. Do any of these sound like you? Or would you add others? Even though I still catch myself doing some of these, nervous system tools like deep breathing and gentle somatic movement have helped me understand why they show up and how to feel more safe in myself. Now I have a hold on these things, I embrace my sensitivity. Want to understand your sensitivity better? Comment HSP and I’ll send you a free guide that dives deeper into this. PS – I’m launching something exciting this week that will help you make sense of your sensitivity in a whole new way. Check the link in my bio – it’s going to be a game changer. ✨✨✨ Because trust me - I’ve been there ❤️ #healingjourney #highlysensitiveperson #hsp #sensitiveempowerment #sensitivenervoussystem #nervoussystemhealing #nervoussytemregulation #weirdhabits #habits #habitsandlifestyles

Sensory issues are LITERALLY THE WORST when you feel like can’t escape them. It’s frustrating being so sensitive compared to other people, so your sensory issues seem really trivial and your reactions seem dramatic. I AM NOT BEING DRAMATIC ITS LITERALLY MY NERVOUS SYSTEM INTERPRETING SENSORY INPUT DIFFERENTLY TO NEUROTYPICAL PEOPLE. also in retrospect my sensory issues probably cause me the most problems at home because I don’t actually go out that much 😭😂😅 my bed is basically an extension of my body at this point #adhd #autism #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryissues #audhd #autistic #actuallyautistic #autisticwomen #autisticwoman #adhdwomen #adhdwoman

Let’s get Smarter in Seconds about sensory sensitivity with @SensorySavant who is #ActuallyAutistic for #AutismAcceptanceMonth ❤️♾️ Our world is full of sensory input! For many people, this is just part of life, for others it can be overwhelming and even distressing. Sensory sensitivity refers to an increased awareness of sensory inputs and how the brain processes them. This is commonly associated with neurodiversity, particularly with autism and ADHD. This may involve being sensitive to light, certain textures like on fabrics or in food, or distress resulting from sounds and smells. Understanding and accommodating sensory sensitivity is crucial to avoiding meltdowns, shutdowns, and burnout. You don’t have to “power through” distressing sensations at the expense of your wellbeing. You may need to reflect on what sensations have caused a negative reaction in order to understand what to accommodate. Accommodating sensory sensitivity might look like stimming, utilizing earplugs, and more. Learn more about this from @autienelle! Sensory sensitivities are not “weird,” and people acknowledging and accommodating their sensory needs should be encouraged. Or at least left alone. EXTRA CREDIT 📝 Do you have sensory sensitivities? How do you accommodate yourself to ease the distress?

What’s your most grounding stim? 💬 Stimming is a natural way the brain self-regulates. It can: 🌀Manage sensory overload 🌀Release energy or tension 🌀Help focus and attention 🌀Soothe emotions like anxiety or frustration 🌀Provide predictability and control For AuDHD individuals, stimming often combines sensory, emotional, and attentional regulation, helping navigate both ADHD impulsivity/restlessness and autistic sensory needs. 🧠 ❓ Does everyone with ADHD or ASD stim? 🤔 Stimming is a universal behavior. Some stim a lot, some a little, some occasionally, it exists on a continuum and is not exclusive to ADHD or ASD. Here are some common ways we stim: ✋ Visual: blinking, doodling, arranging objects 💬 Verbal: humming, repeating words 🎧 Auditory: repeating sounds or songs 🤲 Tactile: nail biting, hair twirling, rubbing fingers 👃 Olfactory: sniffing a familiar scent 💫 Vestibular: rocking, pacing, leg shaking #adhdcoach #Stimming #ADHD #Autism #Neurodiversity
