Bringing back this one because it’s just so real😝 I’m sorry, WHAT🥴 Knowing this is STILL what doctors say to new patients with scoliosis is wildddd. We know so much more about this condition today, and yet for most people’s initial diagnosis, there’s no action taken. As someone with a severe curve, spinal fusion surgery, and a lot of medical related anxiety, it’s disheartening to learn so many people are on the same exact path I was 20 years ago. Not much has changed. I want things to be different, and I want to be able to ease the worries of those following behind me, which is why I’ve created The Bionic Project. Healing has a way of slowing everything down. 4 weeks ago I had TLIF surgery, which is spinal fusion surgery to remove a disc in my spine, replace it with a bone graft/cage and hold it in place with rods and screws while it fuses to my spine over the next 9-12 months. Prior to this, I had 2 less invasive and less intense back surgeries that for various reasons didn’t “fix” me. That makes this my 3rd back surgery in 19 months. I’m learning that recovery isn’t just physical. It’s emotional. Mental. Spiritual. This season has asked me to lean harder than ever on my family. To let go of the pace I used to live at. To trust that rest is not weakness and that healing happens quietly, often behind the scenes. It’s reminded me that I don’t have to do it all, all the time. That being supported is a strength. That the slow days are just as sacred as the big ones. I’m taking things one step at a time. Rebuilding. Re-centering. Reprioritizing. Letting joy and work and life find a new rhythm with a little more grace and a lot more presence. I’m sharing this because I know so many of us put pressure on ourselves to keep pushing, performing, producing no matter what. But sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is pull back, breathe, and trust that your work will still be there when you’re ready. To any fellow small business owner in a hard season right now: you’re not behind. You’re just being asked to meet yourself with grace. That’s not failure, it’s wisdom. It’s the whole point of owning your own business, for it to meet your needs where you are at, pushing and pulling as you are able. Thanks for walking with me, even when I’m quieter. It can take a long time to feel “at-home” in your new spine so we encourage you to have patience. Trust the process - Remember that it is a process, valuable change doesn’t always happen overnight Trust your health and fitness teams - The surgeons do a great job of giving you the best outcome they can and then it’s up to your PT and/or ScolioPilates instructor to recover that strength. We all want you to succeed. Take notice of the milestones - What is it this week that feels easier or stronger than before? No. Early detection is key and the Adam’s Forward Bend Test is the easiest test to have our children checked at home. Other signs to watch: Uneven shoulders, higher shoulder blade or uneven waistline.  HPB SCOLIOSIS SCHOOL CHECKS:  P5, P6, S1, S2 AIS IS NOT AGGREVATED BY: ❌ Carrying Heavy Bags ❌ Strenuous Sports ❌ Poor Posture ❌ Lack of Calcium
 CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO AIS:  ✔️Genetics ✔️Hormonal Influence ✔️Growth Imbalance ✔️Has No Single Known Cause
 IS BRACING EXPENSIVE?  Braces are made-to-order. It costs about $2000+ but Singaporeans can purchase it with a 50% subsidy.  CAN WE CONTINUE EXERCISING? Exercise is crucial to build core strength, reduce pain & enhance muscle endurance. ARE THERE SPORTS THAT WE SHOULD AVOID? Online researches may show certain sports that are not ideal but our doctors in Singapore debunk them as unsupported studies. Faye is allowed to continue Horseback Riding and one-sided focused sport like Badminton.  WHAT ARE THE SEVERE CASES SURGERY OPTIONS?  1. Vertebral Body Tethering: for growing kids, using screws and a flexible rope to correct the curve while preserving spinal motion 2. Spinal Fusion Surgery: implants (screws, rods) to realign the spine and use bone graft material to “weld” the vertebrae together into one solid bone WHEN CAN AN ADOLESCENT UNDERGO THESE SURGERIES? Bone maturity ranges from Sanders 1 - 8. Eight being fully matured. Faye, at S2, is not eligible to go for surgery yet as she has not reached the ideal bone maturity. Puberty or Growth Spurt needs to kick in to take up the VBT option. If VBT’s window is missed, SFS will be the next option. SFS do not allow the patient to grow any more.  HOW LONG IS THE SURGERY? Approx. 7 hrs, 1 week hospitalisation & 1 year MC from PE. WHAT IS THE PAIN LEVEL AFTER SURGERY? It differs from person to person. Current patients who underwent surgeries shared that morphine is needed as pain management.    ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS SHARED BY SCOLIOSIS FOLLOWERS: Every family chooses a different path but here’s to share: Chiro, Gyrotonic, Pilates, TCM & Scroth method.

True story I broke my back in 2010. Not a major break but I faced spinal fusion surgery just to be able to live a normal life not in pain. It was that or a lot of rehab. I figured I’d try the rehab route. What do I have to loose! Although it was a roller coaster at times one thing remained consistent. Rolling helped! I’ve done it twice a day since 2010 and still no surgery required! Literally changing my life! Is this a partnership, yes but it’s one I believe in and works! When this 11-year-old’s parents reached out to @fp.jupiterfl @jake__sullivan_ they were desperately searching for alternatives to spinal fusion surgery. After suffering a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down, his spine began collapsing rapidly in multiple planes, progressing from mild to moderate scoliosis. All clinical indicators were pointing toward severe deformation and the need for invasive spinal fusion surgery - conventional bracing and therapies were failing to stop the progression. Just 11 sessions later, he achieved a 7-degree reduction in spinal curvature - marking what appears to be the FIRST reported reversal of scoliosis in a paralyzed individual. BEFORE (May 2025 - Age 11): ❌ 40° scoliosis via Cobb angle ❌ Significant vertical and horizontal spinal compression ❌ Excessive lumbar and lower thoracic curvature ❌ Right hip hike and right rib drop ❌ Left hip drop and left rib elevation ❌ Slouched posture ❌ Poor trunk stability ❌ Shoulder imbalance AFTER (July 2025 - Age 12): ✅ 33° scoliosis (7° improvement!) ✅ Clear vertical and horizontal spinal decompression ✅ Decreased curvature in lumbar and thoracic regions ✅ More neutral pelvic alignment ✅ Improved rib cage symmetry ✅ Balanced shoulder positioning ✅ Decompression in abdominal and pelvic areas This is what happens when you apply targeted mechanotransduction training from an evidence based practice with precise biomechanical understanding. Today marks six weeks since my spinal fusion surgery. Because I’ve had a lot of restrictions and limitations during recovery, it would’ve been easy to fall into a pit of despair. (See also: Current Events) I wanted to give myself something to look forward to and a tiny bit of daily purpose while on disability leave from work, so I signed up for @gennablackburn’s #75art daily drawing challenge. I ended up recruiting by #CricketPonta to do it with me, and it’s already been such a highlight of each day. Last night while brushing her teeth, she reminded me that I forgot to draw and to make sure to do it before I went to sleep. She had already done hers while I was on a PTA call. 🥹 As much as I’m working to face current events head-on, it’s nice to have a little creative community (and Animal Crossing!) to escape to for a few minutes each day.
