❓ How Should You Squat? ❓ Some people keep their torso almost upright when squatting, while others bend it forward considerably. Which one is correct? Both. The difference is determined by two main factors: 1️⃣ Femur length 2️⃣ Ankle mobility With relatively short femurs and good ankle mobility, it’s easier to keep balanced while going down. People with long femurs and poor ankle mobility, on the other hand, have to push their hips back to stay balanced. This leads to slightly different muscle targeting: 1️⃣ The “upright” squat targets the quads more; 2️⃣ The “bent-over” version focuses more on the glutes. If you have short femurs and good ankle mobility but want to emphasize your glutes in your squats, just keep your knees behind your toes as you go down and push your hips back. If you have long femurs and limited ankle mobility, you can target your quadriceps more by elevating your heels with plates. And work on improving ankle mobility in the meantime, which won’t hurt! Start with your feet: • Open the toes • Then the heels • Then the toes again Now create space in the hips: • Two fingers on your hip bones • Push the hips back slightly (small hinge first) • Then bend the knees From there — sit into the squat and stand straight back up. This is the difference between just doing reps and actually training your body to move well, stay pain-free, and get stronger over time.
