How do you know if you should cue someone to land stiffer or more compliant (softer)?
By not saying shit & letting them be them. Allowing athletes to self-organize can teach you a lot about how they are wired as movers. 💎 This, medical background/history, & CONVERSATION are my top assessments before I intervene.
To me it’s not about classifying them & then training a specific way year-round. That remains fluid. I think it’s about understanding what these movement preferences or biases lend themselves to (ex: potential injury risks, adaptation, skill acquisition learning curve), & the considerations we as coaches can take into account for best supporting them both short & long-term.
Using this reel as an example: considerations for where/when I may cue an athlete to melt/sink/yield into their landing:
-Any sort of lower body tendinopathy (as these landings are less provocative).
-When learning an exercise.
-Looking to explore a deeper range of motion (ROM).
-Teaching a more elastic athlete to be more compliant.
^This may be done in order to balance out all of the stiffness that makes up court/field sport actions. ☯️
Circumstances where I may cue a stiffer/more reactive landing:
-To minimize ground contact time (GCT) as doing so is typically closer to “game speed”.
-Teaching an athlete to be more explosive/reactive when interacting with the ground.

Compliant = health
Stiff = performance
