A few changes in your diet can reduce high cholesterol , triglycerides and improve your overall health. When we consume more carbohydrates than our body can handle, these extra carbohydrates are then processed to become fat molecules, such as triglycerides, LDL and HDL. Vegetables and fruits are loaded with fibre + nutrition and it is common knowledge that they are lower in calories if consumed correctly .Fibre helps by binding to cholesterol and allowing some of the excess to leave our bodies by passing through the excretory system. Studies have shown that being plant-based overall helps to reduce LDL levels and may also help prevent bad cholesterol from binding to the arterial wall! Here are a few other things you can do. Add nuts .Exercise on most days of the week and increase your physical activity. Exercise can hugely improve cholesterol levels. Keep a watch on your sources of carbohydrates, their quality is key and the quantity you are consuming. Cholesterol isn’t simply good or bad as is often stated. There is a sliding scale. It is a substance that can be altered and behave differently by our own metabolic environment. One of the biggest determinants of whether cholesterol will cause damage to our cardiovascular system or just get on with it’s regular job is particle size and inflammatory load (a subject for another day). . LDL particle size can vary greatly. One end of the scale is ‘large fluffy LDL’ which are large globules that in most (not all) situations just drifts on its way without causing any damage. . On the other end of the spectrum we have what is called ‘small dense LDL’. These are tiny compacted particles that have far greater atherogenicity - ability to enter blood vessel walls and trigger plaque formation. . Our diet can notably influence particle size. Rapid rises in blood glucose can lead to elevated triglycerides. This in turn can increase ‘small dense LDL’. . In all cases, atheroma (plaque) formation will always be triggered by endothelial damage via inflammation.
