A two-stroke engine is a type of internal combustion engine that completes a power cycle in just two strokes of the piston—one upstroke and one downstroke—making it highly efficient for lightweight and high-speed applications. Unlike the four-stroke engine, which requires four strokes (intake, compression, power, and exhaust), the two-stroke engine combines these actions, delivering a power stroke with every revolution of the crankshaft. This results in more power output relative to engine size.
The working cycle begins with the piston moving upward, compressing the fuel-air mixture while creating a vacuum that draws in a fresh charge. As the piston reaches the top, the spark plug ignites the compressed mixture, forcing the piston downward in a powerful stroke. At the same time, the downward motion uncovers exhaust and intake ports, allowing burnt gases to exit while drawing in a fresh charge to repeat the process. This simplicity results in fewer moving parts and lighter engine weight.
Two-stroke engines are widely used in motorcycles, chainsaws, outboard motors, and other portable machines due to their high power-to-weight ratio. However, they produce more emissions and wear faster compared to four-stroke engines, making them less favorable for modern vehicles. Innovations like direct fuel injection have helped reduce their environmental impact in newer designs.
