🧠 The Vagus Nerve is arguably the most important nerve in any naturopathic clinic. The Vagus nerve carries signals between the brain and key areas of the body including the digestive organs and heart. This nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is really all about ‘rest and digest’. The Vagus nerve regulates digestive organ movements (motility) as well as the release of digestive juices (e.g. digestive enzymes). It also influences heart rate, speech, mood and more! Stimulation of the Vagus nerve can support digestion and hence nutrient absorption in the gut, ultimately increasing the delivery of nutrients to cells all around the body and reducing digestive complaints. It can also reduce blood pressure, feelings of anxiety and pain perception. 😮 Interestingly this nerve superhighway carries more information TOWARDS the brain (e.g. from the digestive system) than from it. This reinforces just how much our gut health can influence our brain – think, the gut-brain connection! This is such a key concept in naturopathic medicine and one we really focus on in our courses @collegeofnaturopathicmedicine How can you stimulate this amazing nerve? 🫁 Abdominal (diaphragmatic) breathing exercises. 🌱 Being outdoor in green country space. 🙌 Social enrichment (being around others). 🎵 Singing (loud especially!), humming, playing music. 🥶 Cold exposure (e.g. cold showers) 😂 Laughter (i.e. ‘belly laughter!’). 🏃‍♂️ Exercise (e.g. high-intensity interval exercise).   Great visual by @sciepro.official

Can you do it? . The science behind it👇🏼 . Swallowing involves coordinated activity between several cranial nerves, with the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) playing a central role in the process. . The vagus nerve plays an important role in controlling the muscles of the pharynx and larynx, and regulating reflexes such as coughing and swallowing. . 👉🏼 Why swallowing 3 times in a row is a vagus nerve function test: . 💥Motor function check: The vagus nerve innervates the muscles that control voluntary and reflexive swallowing. If there’s difficulty initiating or completing three consecutive swallows, it may indicate vagal dysfunction or weakness. . 💥 Coordination and tone: Swallowing three times smoothly tests the nerve’s ability to maintain coordination and muscle tone over repeated actions. A dysfunctional vagus nerve might result in delayed, weak, or effortful swallows, or even choking or coughing during the process. . 👉🏼Importance of the test: . 💥 Non-invasive functional screen: It’s a quick and simple way to screen vagus nerve integrity without medical equipment. . 💥Can reveal subtle nervous system issues: Especially helpful for early detection of dysautonomia, brainstem dysfunction, or nerve injury. . 💥Relates to other vagal functions: Since the vagus also regulates heart rate, digestion, and vocalization, swallowing issues might reflect broader autonomic dysregulation. . NOTE: this is a low-barrier clinical check often used alongside other signs (e.g. gag reflex, voice quality, heart rate variability) for a holistic view of vagus nerve health. . 💬 Comment ‘Vagus’ if you are looking for ways to strengthen and improve your vagus nerve health. . 🚫 This is not medical advice. This is for educational purposes only and does not replace medical assessment or treatment. #vagusnerve #vagusnervestimulation #vagusnervehealing #vagusnervehealth #parasympatheticnervoussystem #sympatheticnervoussystem #nervoussystemhealth

Headaches, jaw pain, brain fog, or neck tension that won’t let up? Your vagus nerve might be the missing link. It’s the body’s main calming pathway — running from your brain through your neck, chest, and gut. When it’s stuck in fight-or-flight, muscles stay tight, nerves stay irritated, and pain becomes your new normal. Try these 3 simple vagus nerve activations to shift your system out of survival mode: 1️⃣ Cymba Concha Massage – Stimulates the vagus via your ear. Great before stress or during jaw tension. 2️⃣ Cold Exposure – Splash or cold pack to the face/neck triggers the dive reflex to calm inflammation and dizziness. 3️⃣ Humming – Vibrates vocal branches of the vagus. Try it when anxiety builds or before sleep. Comment FIX if you’ve been suffering with head, neck, or jaw pain, and I’ll DM you more info about my 1:1 program. We don’t just treat the physical side — we retrain the nerve signals keeping your system stuck in a loop that blocks healing. #VagusNerve #TMJRelief #NeckPainRelief #HeadacheHelp #migraines #vagusnervestimulation

The Vagus Nerve = Your Body’s Reset Switch • Longest cranial nerve in the body • Connects brain, heart, lungs and gut • Controls ~75% of your parasympathetic nervous system • Higher vagal tone = calmer mind, better digestion, stronger immunity Wild Facts • It literally means “wandering nerve” because it travels everywhere • It can slow your heart rate within seconds • It influences mood via the gut–brain axis • Strong vagus tone is linked to longevity and emotional resilience Humming activates Vagus, it lengthens exhale, activates parasympathetic state which helps recovery, it Increases nitric oxide in sinuses and improve oxygen flow Quick Practice • Inhale through nose • Long slow hummmmmm on exhale • create vibration in chest, throat, face • Do 2–5 minutes Most people feel calmer within seconds If you want to start a career in the healing arts, comment apply @keyretherapy #rest #recover Amazing video by @xavork

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗔𝗚𝗨𝗦 𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗘, or CN X, is a vital part of the parasympathetic nervous system, essential for maintaining balance ⚖️ i.e. homeostasis. Pictured in the middle video as the illuminated blue nerves 🔵. It originates in the medulla oblongata of the brainstem and extends through the neck and thorax, reaching the abdomen. This nerve innervates the heart, lungs, digestive tract, and major blood vessels. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🫀 Heart: The vagus nerve helps regulate heart rate by slowing it down. 👅 Digestive System: It stimulates peristalsis and digestive secretions, enhancing digestive processes. 🛡️Immune System: It plays a role in modulating the immune response. 𝗡𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 🛣️ The vagus nerve is a key player in the autonomic nervous system, specifically the parasympathetic branch, which is responsible for the ‘rest and digest’ response. It counterbalances the ‘fight or flight’ response of the sympathetic nervous system, helping to maintain physiological balance. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 💢 The vagus nerve significantly influences the body’s response to stress. Activation of vagal tone can reduce stress-related symptoms by lowering cortisol levels and heart rate. This calming effect is mediated through the release of acetylcholine, which acts on the heart to slow down the heart rate and on the digestive system to enhance function. 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 🫁 Breathing techniques, especially slow and deep diaphragmatic breathing, and humming can stimulate the vagus nerve. This stimulation enhances the parasympathetic response, reducing stress and promoting a state of calm. The vagus nerve’s innervation of the diaphragm allows these breathing exercises to effectively trigger its calming effects. The vagus nerve is crucial for autonomic regulation, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Its extensive network and influence on vital organs shows its impact in maintaining health, managing stress, and promoting relaxation and recovery. ♡ Video @sciepro.official ✦ For more @Primalbreathwork 📲 ✧ Save ⬇️, tag someone 👥 or share 📨 if you found it useful. You have NO idea how this nerve controls your health… This is the vagus nerve — the master switch of your nervous system. One nerve that tells your body when to panic… and when to heal. When the vagus nerve is working right, it can: • Calm anxiety in minutes • Slow your heart rate • Deepen your breathing • Turn digestion back ON • Reduce inflammation & pain • Improve sleep and recovery • Release jaw, neck, and TMJ tension • Help your body feel safe again When it’s blocked or overstimulated? Your body stays stuck in fight-or-flight — even when nothing is wrong. That’s why people feel: ❌ anxious for no reason ❌ tight jaw & neck ❌ gut issues ❌ shallow breathing ❌ poor sleep ❌ chronic stress 👉 This is NOT just neck work. 👉 This is nervous system regulation. 👉 This is how the body resets itself. You don’t heal when you’re stressed. You heal when the vagus nerve is activated.

We can’t talk about the vagus nerve without speaking about vasovagal syncope, something that affects so many people’s quality of life. Vasovagal syncope is an overactivity in the vagus nerve causing issues such as the ones listed above, and most importantly, fainting. It is not as simple as toning the vagus nerve for this condition. Although getting out of fight or flight (sympathetic nervous state) can be beneficial. Additionally the following support can be helpful 👇🏼 💥Increasing sodium, fluid levels and blood pressure 💥Nervous system regulation 💥Breathing exercises 💥Compression gear (socks) In my class Sunday I will touch on vasovagal syndrome and the nervous system, as I aim to educate and touch on all things vagus nerve - however our main focus will be low tone/malfunction. Some of the less aggressive techniques I teach can also help (breathwork, humming/chanting), but as always know your own body and go slow! #vasovagalsyncope #dysautonomia #nervoussystem #fainting

The vagus nerve was one of the most powerful nerves in the body. When it’s restricted, it doesn’t function optimally. It connects the brain to the heart and digestive system. If there’s too much tension in the neck, it can cause problems. Therefore, doing a powerful fascia release will create space for it to function properly. Do this Fascial release on both sides. Take one hand and pin the skin on the opposite trap, twist to create friction. Take the other hand and push the chin away, diagonally, and up. Move around and breathe! This will reduce the tension in the front of the neck and help regulate the vagus nerve. When you do this, see if you notice one side of your body, completely relax.

Imagine that it’s a Sunday afternoon. You’ve just eaten a delicious three course meal and now you’re sitting down on the couch to unwind and relax. You feel completely at rest, so much so, that you begin to doze off in and out of sleep. While you may think your body is as relaxed as you are, in fact, one of the divisions of your nervous system is hard at work. The parasympathetic nervous system is busy slowing your heart rate, regulating your breathing and shouting out orders to the organs of your digestive system. The ‘rest and digest’ period is well underway. One nerve in particular is working diligently, this is the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve, or the 10th cranial nerve (CN X), is the longest and most complex of the cranial nerves. The vagus nerve differs slightly as it primarily supplies the organs of the chest and abdomen, as opposed to the head and neck. It is called “vagus” as it is a vagrant or wandering nerve going down to the abdomen. It is appropriately called the tenth cranial nerve as it is the tenth pair of nerves to emerge from the brain (in order of, in particular, working diligently, this is the vagus nerve.
