Selv test…Vo2max DIY🚲 Okay jeg fik lidt hjælp…🙏 🏃‍♀️Jeg har længe villet på cyklen igen og se en status på kapaciteten efter jeg er begyndt at løbe længere distancer end tidligere år. 💧Den sidste dråbe motivation kom dog fra mine seneste bike timer, hvor jeg har oplevet en ikke genkendt forpustethed, som jeg var nysgerrig på. 👌Alt så dog fint ud og tilmed en my bedre end sidste test, som på sin vis var forventet, men ikke idag, da jeg havde løbet 9 km få timer før. Og jeg ved at træning et døgn før Vo2max har en indvirkning. Så nu erklærer jeg mig mere end klar til, at erobre 2024 træningsmæssigt? Hvad med dig? Just completed my VO2max test in Amsterdam at ConTest 🏃🏽‍♀️ My current score is 44, which is considered ‘good’ for my age, but not quite there yet for endurance athletes. My aerobic threshold needs improvement, while my anaerobic threshold is looking better. Probably thanks to my CrossFit background. Breathing efficiency is on point, and the pace I submitted matched the results well. However, the early rise in lactate suggests my base endurance could use some work. The plan? More long runs and extended bike sessions, following the 80/20 rule: 80% below my aerobic threshold, 20% above with 3-6 min interval blocks. After 2-3 months of training at these levels, I’ll tweak the pace. I’ll also build up the duration on my legs and bike during this time. Getting tested PRE Great Icelandic Swim (documentary series airs Channel 4: 7:30pm EVERY Saturday: 7, 14 and 21 Feb) I’ve SO MUCH respect and admiration for Kristian Blummenfelt who reportedly recorded the highest VO₂ max ever measured in a human. 🔥 101.1 mL/kg/min To put that into perspective: VO₂ max measures the maximum amount of oxygen the body can use during intense exercise. It’s one of the best indicators we have for aerobic endurance and elite performance. For years, the benchmark was 97.5 mL/kg/min, attributed to Norwegian cyclist Oskar Svendsen — a number already considered almost superhuman. Blummenfelt didn’t just edge past it… he obliterated it. What makes this even more impressive: • Most well-trained endurance athletes sit in the 70–85 range • Elite world-class performers might touch the 90s • 101.1 is basically off the physiological charts While VO₂ max alone doesn’t guarantee victory, it sets an extraordinary ceiling for endurance potential and @kristianblu is the absolute undisputed KING! 🤔What is VO2max? VOmax, or maximal oxygen uptake, is a measure of your body’s maximal capacity to utilise oxygen during intense exercise. It’s often measured in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/ min). This helps to compare values between individuals of different body sizes. 🧐 How do we measure it? The only way to measure VOmax accurately is by calculating the volume of oxygen and carbon dioxide that enters and exits your respiratory system during a maximal effort. This is usually done in an exercise physiology lab with specialised medical equipment. 🤨 How accurate is my watch’s estimation? For some people, it can be very close to their true VO2max measured in a lab but for others it can be way off. Your watch estimates your VO2max using an algorithm based off of your pace and heart rate during activities. If you don’t have an external heart rate monitor, then your VOmax is probably wrong. You must wear an external chest strap or arm band to accurately measure your heart rate in order to get the best possible estimation. 😮‍💨 How can I improve my VO2max? You need to train at or close to VO2max for short durations. This can be done with interval training where you raise your heart rate for short bursts, recover and repeat until you have accumulated at least 8 mins of high intensity volume. This will get you the best results. It’s also important to do lots of low intensity volume at around 60% of your VO2max to improve your body’s efficiency at transporting oxygen to working muscles. How I improved my VO2 max 🫁🏃🏻‍♂️📈 Ironically running more runs at a slower pace has been huge for me in terms of improving my VO2. Easy runs significantly strengthen the aerobic system and because they are less taxing, you can do more of them! ✅ Interval training has also played a huge part. Sessions like 12 × 400m with 90s rest or 6 x 800m with 120s rest have been brilliant at building my VO2 over the years which is a point in itself. These adjustments take time and results often come over the span of many months and years! 📈 Which means consistency is VITAL to making sure your V02 max increases too. Each run you tick off is slowly but surely helping and never a waste! 😁 Let me know if you have any questions

While research shows that certain training methods can improve VO2max more than others, it’s the consistent accumulation and progression of training using a range of training intensities and durations that’s the most important factor for improving VO2max, not just a specific session type. 2. This list would look entirely different if rankings were based on the best training to improve endurance race performance or sport-specific conditioning. I’ll do those next!
