Pilates was never about building muscle size — and that’s why it’s often misunderstood. Pilates isn’t meant to exhaust you, leave you sore, or make muscles look bigger. So when it’s judged by sweat, soreness, or muscle size, it gets misunderstood. Pilates was created to build strength by focusing on: ✨ control instead of momentum ✨ precision instead of repetition ✨ breath to support movement ✨ flow and coordination ✨ training the nervous system to move efficiently Pilates DOES build strength — just not the kind you measure by muscle size. What people actually feel with Pilates: ✨ better posture and alignment ✨ deeper muscle awareness ✨ fewer aches and injuries ✨ stronger, more stable movement ✨ a calmer, more connected nervous system That’s why people fall in love with Pilates. Not because it burns the most calories — but because their body starts to feel better, move better, and work better. Pilates doesn’t replace the gym. It gives your body the foundation to train well for the long term. A lot of people think the reformer was invented to make Pilates harder. But originally, it was actually designed to make Pilates more accessible. Joseph Pilates developed the reformer using springs attached to a bed frame while working with injured and unwell patients. Many of them couldn’t get down onto the floor to perform traditional mat exercises. The springs allowed movements to be supported or assisted, helping people build strength and mobility while lying down. That’s why the reformer is so effective for: • injury rehabilitation • beginners • people with limited mobility The springs can make exercises easier or harder, depending on how they’re used. So while reformer Pilates can definitely be challenging… its original purpose was actually to help people move when mat Pilates wasn’t possible. 1. I stopped overthinking how creative my class plans had to be. 80% bread-and-butter classics sprinkled with 20% creativity. Turns out clients come back for well-taught fundamentals, not a gymnastics class. 2. I repeated class plans. A lot. Repetition isn’t lazy but it’s actually how people learn and improve. One class shouldn’t be their only chance to learn and refine a movement. 3. I made people feel successful, not just challenged. I stopped chasing “harder” and the craziest flows I saw on social media, but started coaching people so they left feeling strong and capable. 4. I stopped caring if movement looked Instagram-perfect. A lunge doesn’t need to look aesthetic to be effective. Bodies are all built and move differently so if they feel it where the exercise intends, then you’ve done your job. 5. I simplified my cues. Less poetic imagery, more clear communication. Simple cues land. Complicated cues sound impressive until nobody gets them, and you’re left with 12 pairs of eyes all wandering the room confused and 12 bodies all performing a different exercise. 6. I leaned hard into the basics. The classics work for a reason. I layered them, refined them, cued them better instead of constantly reinventing exercises. 7. I stopped trying to teach the “perfect” class every time. Progress over perfection. Some classes feel off. Reflect, adjust, learn from it and move on. 8. I built connection, not just good programming. Remember your clients’ names, talk to them before and after class, coach people and check in individually during the class. Create an experience for them, and not just “another group exercise class”. Community and connection waitlisted my classes as much as programming did. i’ve been in the fitness industry for 10 years, but the moment i stepped into the pilates world and got to know the ”pilates body” trend… it did mess up with my head🥲 reality is: only things you need to be an amazing instructor is a body where you can see the actual effects of pilates aka great posture, strong core & body control. and this will look different on every instructor🩵 #pilatesinstructor #pilates #pilatesbody #bodytrend
