To perform push-ups with proper form and get the most benefit, here are 4 key details you need to focus on: 1. Elbow angle & hand position Keep elbows at about a 45° angle by externally rotating your shoulders. Spread your fingers for better stability and wrist comfort. 2. Shoulders down Avoid shrugging. Keep shoulders away from your ears to reduce strain and improve control. 3. Let your shoulder blades move Retract on the way down, protract on the way up. This helps your chest fully stretch and contract. 4. Tight core, no sagging Keep your body in a straight line. As you get stronger, you can use weaker bands to continue building up that strength to the full push-up 🙌🏾! For proper push-up form, hug your elbows IN and keep your core engaged. Let’s talk about push ups.

We’ve been told to “tuck our elbows IN” during our push ups, and while that’s a great cue for beginners I’d like to take it a step further.

First off, why is tucking the elbows a good cue for beginners? Simply because “flaring the elbows” (opposite of tucking) is a common compensation for lack of strength. It also puts the shoulder in a more vulnerable position and could cause problems down the line.

Now, we don’t always need to tuck our elbows IN. It truly depends on one major factor: THE WIDTH.

For example if we do wide push ups (second example in the clip) the amount of “tucking” we need to do is minimal. If we overdo it, we end up with our elbows caving way in putting a lot of stress on the wrists, and elbows while being a poor position to generate force.

Instead of focusing on “tucking the elbows” I just like to see the position of my forearms in relationship to the ground and make them as perpendicular as possible. Another way to see it is to have the elbow right on top of the wrist. This will be the most optimal position to push from wether we do wide push ups or shoulder width push ups (this is not possible with diamond push ups).

👉🏽 In short: tucking the elbows excessively might lead to the elbows caving IN too much, while not tucking the elbows at all might lead to flaring them more than its ideal.

🧠 Finally, it’s worth mentioning that a bit of flaring and a bit of inward tucking is not the end of the world. We are NOT machines. That said, for best force production and safety having the forearms perpendicular to the floors is ideal.

📝 Last note: the narrower you go, the more inwards you’d need to bring the elbows. The wider, the less.
