Steal my route up the Black Cuillins: Isle of Skye 👇🏼 Are you visiting Scotland this summer? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Making a road trip to the Isle of Skye? Looking to tick off some bucket list hikes? ✅ The Black Cuillins are the UK’s most impressive mountain range and whilst they look menacing, there is an accessible route for competent hikers to try out…🥾 The route 📍 Starting from Sligachan you walk towards the Cuillins and approach from the northwest. As this route is circular you may head up onto the ridge line in either direction but I do recommend going anticlockwise for the best views. There is only one challenge (in my opinion) that comes in the form of a steep scree field, but with careful footing this is easily accomplished ☺️ I use @alltrails for the map and route plan and would 100% advise you to use something of a similar nature. 📍The Skye Trail Have I sold it to you? What an incredible landscape - it’s almost Icelandic feeling! We have so much beauty here in the UK, and this is honestly one of the best places I’ve been, EVER I love that we can really make trails like this our own - like, yes someone blazes the trail and writes a guidebook (much appreciated!) but then every one of us who walks it creates our own version… and I don’t mean by getting lost, although, that would do it 😂 After a howling start with the weather, but still loving and embracing it thanks to my steadfast kit and systems (sponge cloths are life, and @rab.equipment waterproofs are top of the game), the sun appeared as I headed towards the mid-section. So I scampered slightly quicker and further to make it to the Cuillins I took an extra night there, camping, swimming, taking on the ‘Bad Step’ route (more of a ‘spicy rock’ if you ask me) and veering off to summit a Munro early morning before continuing the trail. Blà Bheinn - what a beauty! If you’re up for a challenge, then this is hands down one of the best ways to really see and experience Skye, off the beaten track. 📌 SGURR ALASDAIR, BLACK CUILLIN, ISLE OF SKYE, SCOTLAND LAST WEEKEND WAS ANOTHER INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE UP IN THE BLACK CUILLIN! A SMALL GROUP OF US WENT UP WITH A SET MISSION, AN STAC, IN PINN AND AS MORE MANY PEAKS AND SCRAMBLES WE COULD MANAGE! WE SUMMITED 5 TOPS AS A TEAM THEN PARTED WAYS AFTER WE'D ALL SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETELY THE INACCESSIBLE PINNACLE, THE AN STAC, COLLIES LEDGE, SGURR MHIC CHOINNICH, THEARLAIC RIDGE, SGURR THEARLAIC, AND THE HIGHEST POINT ON THE WHOLE ISLAND SGURR ALASDAIR! ONCE THE WEATHER TOOK A TURN FOR THE WORSE AND ONE OF OUR CREW WASN'T FEELING VERY WELL HE DECIDED TO HEAD DOWN WITH HIS SON VIA THE RIDGE THAT HEADS BACK DOWN TOWARDS GLENBRITTLE FROM THE SUMMIT OF SGURR DEARG! I DECIDED TO KEEP PUSHING FORWARD AS IT WAS ONLY HALF 3 IN THE AFTERNOON BY THIS POINT AND THE WEATHER FORECAST WAS PREDICTING IT TO START CLEARING UP BY ABOUT 5PM WHICH IN THE END ACTUALLY TURNED OUT TO BE MORE LIKE 8PM BUT I WASNT TO KNOW THAT AT THE TIME SO I STILL PUSHED ON ANYHOW. I MANAGED TO BAG ANOTHER 9 PEAKS ON MY OWN WHICH ENDED UP BEING THE 3 TOPS OF SGURR BANACHDIACH THEN THE 2 TOPS OF SGURR GREADAIDH AND FINALLY THE 4 ABSOLUTELY MENTAL TOPS OF MHADAIDH TAKING MY TOTAL SUMMITS FOR THE DAY TO 14! I THINK AFTER ANOTHER COUPLE OF MISSIONS UP THERE I'LL BE CONFIDENT WNOUGH TO HOPEFULLY ATTEMPT THE FULL TRAVERSE NEXT YEAR IN ONE DAY! WHAT A CRAZY BUT MAGINCAL EXPERIENCE IT WAS! The Cuillin ridge is Majestical. One of the most impressive peaks on the ridgeline has to be Am Basteir. The 934m mountain is known as the Executioner and is one of 11 munros located on the the main Cuillin ridge. The narrow blade of rock, which resembles a sharks tooth, has overhanging northern face which drops vertically for several hundred feet to the scree slopes below. The easiest route to the summit of this peak is from Sligachan. The path follows the left bank of the Allt Dearg Beag for 5 kilometres to a small lochan in the Coire a’ Bhasteir, before climbing up a gruelling scree slope to the bealach on the main ridge between Sgurr nan Gillean and Am Basteir. From here you get a non exposed but steep 300m scramble across the east ridge will bring you to the summit. Care should be taken near the top as there is a “bad step”, a 3-metre-high (10-foot) notch in the ridge to negotiate around 50m from the summit. This can be down climbed or bypassed by taking a short but exposed down-scramble via its southern slopes before re ascending up to the summit. How to get here ⬇️ Firstly SAVE this so you don’t forget about this unbelievable hike! This here is a viewpoint nestled amongst the mystical Black Cuillins on the wonderful Isle Of Skye. And I can’t begin to explain how truly magical it was to finally witness this breathtaking view! This here is 📍- Sgurr Na Stri. However, this is not a simple stroll up to a viewpoint from the car though, it requires you to embark on a 15 mile pit and back adventure. So it is incredibly vital that you have your wits about you. You bring essential gear with you and plenty of energy to get you there and back. Or alternatively this would make an ideal camp spot so you can split it over two days to lessen the blow on your legs! You begin the hike from Sligachan Old Bridge which in itself is utterly beautiful, you really have to see this view before you die!
