Hamstring & Calf Stretch for Full Leg Flexibility This is one of the best exercises to target both your hamstrings and your calves. Why is this important? Because the gastrocnemius (the big calf muscle) also bends the knee. If it’s too tight, it prevents you from straightening your leg fully, even if your hamstrings are flexible. ✅ How to do it: Place one leg straight in front of you, heel close to the wall. The closer the heel gets to the wall, the deeper the stretch for your calves. Keep your leg straight and your lower back as flat as possible. ✅ Where you’ll feel it: You might feel the stretch under your knee, on your calf, or across the back of your thigh. All are correct — the line of tension can run along the whole posterior chain. ✅ Goal position: Lean forward, chest and belly down towards the leg. Most people STRETCH their HAMSTRINGS in one straight line… but each hamstring fibre needs a different position. Here’s how to stretch them in an isolated and targeted way for real results: 🔹 1. Semimembranosus – Isolated Stretch Step 1: Move the leg into abduction. Step 2: Add external rotation of the hip. Step 3: Hold this position for a gentle passive stretch. Step 4: For deeper results → do Abduction + External Rotation + METs • Push gently against resistance for 5 seconds And hold for 30 sec. 🔹 2. Biceps Femoris – Isolated Stretch Step 1: Move the leg into abduction with internal rotation. Step 2: Hold to feel the stretch along the outer hamstring line.
