The resistance of the flywheel can help you challenge your muscles and improve strength and power, both concentrically and eccentrically. Eccentric exercise involves lengthening the muscles while under tension, as opposed to concentric exercise, which involves shortening the muscles. Flywheel training can involve both concentric and eccentric muscle actions, depending on the specific exercise being performed and the position of the flywheel. For example, during a flywheel squat, the concentric phase would involve standing up from the squat position and shortening the muscles in your legs. The eccentric phase would involve lowering down into the squat position and lengthening the muscles in your legs. The inertia of the flywheel is what provides the resistance for the exercises. As you push or pull, the flywheel begins to rotate. The more weight that is on the flywheel, the harder it will be to get it moving and the more resistance you will feel as you exercise. It’s also worth noting that the harder you push or pull, the more resistance you will create.
