And what this thing can do is absolutely insane. Imagine a world where you could invent concrete that could heal itself. Or you could design a phone battery that could be charged one time, and then never run out of juice. That sounds like science fiction, but it’s not. This chip is gonna make it possible with quantum computing. Here’s how quantum computing works (ELI5). Imagine the process to invent the material for an infinite battery was actually a giant maze. If you solve the maze, you invent the formula for a new battery technology. A normal computer would have to try every single pathway in the maze, one at a time. And it could take centuries to find the right path all the way through. But a quantum computer works differently, because it can try every single path in the maze at the same time. This is essentially the difference between a bit and a qubit (the quantum bits that power quantum computers) Now this new Majorana chip has an architecture that can sustain up to 1 million qubits at the same time. That’s 1 million different pathways through the maze, every moment, until it’s solved. And what this means, is pretty incredible. When a scientist goes into a lab to create a material or a design new drug, they won’t need to run experiments. Because this chip will just give them the right answer the very first time. And It’s hard to wrap your head around what this means, but essentially, it’s new medicines, new iPhone screens that can never crack, new metals for planes that fly at supersonic speeds. Google has just announced a major breakthrough in the world of quantum computing. Remember their Willow quantum chip that they unveiled in December of last year? Well. For the first time in HISTORY,  Willow has demonstrated the first-ever algorithm to achieve verifiable quantum advantage on hardware, surpassing even the fastest classical supercomputers (13,000x faster). It can compute the structure of a molecule, and paves a path towards real-world applications. You might remember that back in 2019, Google famously demonstrated that a quantum computer could solve a problem that would take the fastest classical supercomputer thousands of years. Today’s breakthrough moves us much closer to quantum computers that can drive major discoveries in areas like medicine and materials science. Now there is debate in the quantum community, whether this is all just marketing speak or a real step towards quantum supremacy. I’m merely an enthusiast, certainly not an expert, so I am definitely not smart enough to weight in. But at the very worse, this means more excitement and funding for physics research, which I think is a great thing. To put that in perspective, that’s 7.3 million times longer than the universe has existed. This breakthrough aligns with a theory first proposed by physicist David Deutsch, suggesting that quantum computers may be solving problems by working with parallel versions of themselves across multiple universes. Known as the Multiverse Theory, this idea helps explain the extraordinary power of quantum computing. Unlike classical computers, which use bits that represent either 1 or 0, quantum computers use qubits that can exist in multiple states simultaneously. When qubits are entangled, their computational power grows exponentially. For example, just 5 qubits can process 32 different combinations at once. Traditionally, quantum computers have faced a major challenge: they are fragile, and scaling them up increases errors. Willow solves this problem. As the system gets bigger, it becomes more stable and accurate, a milestone that researchers have been trying to achieve for 30 years. To operate, the chip is kept in a dilution fridge at temperatures colder than outer space.
