For those who are training from home with very little equipment they can be a fun substitute till you have a better option This is a position you are going to feel weak in! You cannot use a lot of weight. Leave that ego at the door. What we want to focus on is Knees forward - as far over the toe we can get for a whole lot of quads Then we also want to keep our torso as upright as possible Don’t hinge forward!! This takes it off the quads as much and also will lead to you pulling the bar into your legs Keep you arms long and straight behind you Don’t pull the bar into you! Let the bar hang with dead arms straight down behind you The further your knees are forward, the further the bar is behind you, the more quads we Will get! Always use a large heel elevation to make the movement most effective Is the barbell hack squat perfect? No, but it can be a fun and horrible substitute when you have very limited options! Enjoy!!!

📥 IF YOU WANT TO BE HUMBLED… TRY THIS EXERCISE… (1.5 Rep Hack Squats)! 🥵 • 🧨 Pro Tip - For even MORE quad focus, use a narrow stance! 🔥 • ⭐️ TRY THIS EXERCISE… (1.5 Rep Hack Squats)! 🥵 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Hack Squats are one of THE most humbling exercise exercises that I’ll ever do. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ You can compare it to barbell squats with the motion of the exercise, but these are way more quad focused. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ For barbell squats, you’re using your entire posterior chain to move the barbell up and down. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Even if you’re doing quad focused barbell squats, your glutes, hamstrings, and core are all going to be activated at one point during the exercise. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ For Hack Squats, the machine provides you with support that barbell squats don’t give you. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ There’s no need to try and balance yourself on the Hack Squat machine because the back rest already does that for you. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ This machine also allows MORE knee flexion, aka your knees going over your toes, which ultimately puts more emphasis on the quads. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Completing the motion of the Hack Squat is humbling enough, BUT if you want to take it to the next level, add little half reps into the mix! 💪🏽 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Find a comfortable position on the platform for your feet. I would place them a little further up than directly beneath you. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Make sure your back is pressed firmly against the back rest. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Lower down to at least that 90° angle position. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Raise back up about 6 inches, go back down, then push back up to starting position again - this is the HALF REP. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ You’re using your ENTIRE foot to push that Hack Squat back up! 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ CONTROL the machine on the way down. 💯 ꫂ ၴႅၴ Start with a lower weight at first to get the motion down. The hack squat often feels harder than the barbell squat for some people. But why? The hack squat is a fixed movement, using a back support to keep the torso upright and forcing the knees to drive forward over the toes. This makes the quadriceps the primary limiting factor. Compare that to a barbell squat. A barbell squat allows more muscles to contribute. While the knees still travel forward to load the quadriceps, the hips are free to move back more, increasing posterior chain involvement, including the glutes and lower back. I learned this the hard way. I could back squat heavy, but the first time I used a hack squat, the load felt brutal. Not because the machine was harder, but because it removed my ability to shift work away from my quads and rely on my posterior chain. Some people may find the hack squat harder due to: Longer femurs (upper leg length) Limited ankle mobility Weaker quadriceps Machines aren’t easier for everyone. They’re often better at exposing weak links. Hack squats. Love em! Pendulums too. I love the fact that they give us the ability to hit crazy depths that the vast majority of us could on dream of with any conventional squat pattern. This allows us to really challenge the quads in the lengthened (stretched) range when there is a huge amount of flexion at the knee. This is great, and the whole idea of programming hacks/pendulums in the first place. But just as the quads are at full stretch at the bottom in the ass to the grass position, so are the associated tendons and with heavier loads, over time, this can spell disaster. I’ve literally lost count of the number of times I’ve really aggravated patella tendons on very heavy, very deep hacks. Some people like to use bands, which I sort of get, but it’s not really my thing. I think a very slightly shorter range of motion is the answer. Deep enough to still challenge the quads substantially in the lengthened range but not so deep that you rocket the tendons, too. Maybe a 10 degree reduction at the knee is a good starting point. So with hacks it’s either a little lighter with plenty of depth or heavier with a band or a slightly shorter range. The option that I didn’t mention is performing them tired, later on in the session to make them feel heavier than they really are….but that’s tomorrows reel. Tune in for less knee pain.

Hack squat tips: 1.) If your knees feel uncomfortable in this exercise, there is a good chance they will feel comfortable over time. Just keep squatting with good technique, and make sure you’re pushing evenly through your heels as well as your toes. 2.) If you descend into the bottom position slowly, then you will likely stimulate slightly more growth, but in a safer way. 3.) It’s OK to come up explosively, as long as you are still under control. In fact, you may need quite a bit of explosion in order to get out of the bottom in this exercise. 4.) When I was already a very strong squatter, I was doing about three plates on this machine. This is because hack squats can take a while to get used to. Not only does this feel better over time for your knees, but you can get much stronger over time on this exercise. Want to train like me? It’s an amazing machine because it stabalizers your body really well and allows just the legs to do the work. . ❗️Don’t get me wrong, barbell squats are great but they are way hard to execute correctly and most of the time the low back gives out or the cardiovascular system before the legs because it’s a hard ass movement. . ⚠️Your ankle/ hip mobility and to an extent shoulder mobility need to be dialed in. This allows us to use more weight and overload those quads and glutes and have those muscles doing the work rather than your back giving out or your heart rate, specifically for building muscle. .
