Alignment in the handstand is crucial, especially when advancing to more advanced handstand skills. This alignment is all about structuring your body optimally, utilizing larger muscles for enhanced stability and freedom in balancing your handstand. Consider standing for hours: you wouldn’t bend your legs or arch your back, but rather seek efficiency to conserve energy. Similarly, in a handstand, efficient alignment conserves energy. First, strengthening your elbows is vital in a handstand, so your biceps and triceps, which are smaller muscles, aren’t overly strained. In a handstand, pushing the floor begins with your elbows, locking them so the power of the push can continues up in your alignment. This push then travels up, locking your shoulders in place during your handstand. Achieving maximum shoulder push, away from the floor, stabilizes the scapula on your ribcage. This allows larger back muscles to take over, securing your shoulder alignment in the handstand. This shoulder push also aids in ribcage alignment in a handstand. Bringing your ribcage in, using the push of the floor feels like exhaling to make your ribcage as small as possible. This will help shifting your weight to your fingertips for better balance, and bring this part in alignment for a perfect handstand. Continuing upwards in your handstand alignment, your hips play a role. The push, starting from your elbows, affects your shoulders, ribcage, spine, and ultimately your pelvis. Engaging your lower abdominal and glute muscles brings your pelvis into alignment, creating a solid foundation for your handstand. This results in a well-aligned handstand position, poised for a refined balance with minimal effort. Are you practicing your handstands? Do you like to use the wall as a spotter? Make sure it’s not giving you a 🍌 back. Bad posture can be very hard to correct and it can eventually lead to shoulder and lower back pain. Maybe it’s time to break up with Paul the Wall 🤔… try using the wall to help you with posture instead of depending on it to catch your over jump. 🚨IMPORTANT: the drill on this video will only work if: 1) you keep your arms extended (like for real for real) 2) you place your hands correctly underneath your shoulders. One straight leg distance apart from the wall. 3) you slowly tip toe away from the wall. Don’t kick away, too much momentum will just throw you over the alignment and could lead into a fall. ⚠️SAFETY FIRST!
