But it’s the position of your arms as you pull the bar down that changes the exercise. Even though a wide grip gets a little more lat activation, the close grip lat pulldown puts your arms in a stronger position, and you can generally pull more weight. So it’s a great addition to your back workout. In fact, you could include both grip widths in your workout. Pull Up vs. Lat Pulldowns 🤔 🗺️ Fostering a sense of adventure something I don’t see prioritised very often, and can probably have a big impact on your success on a program. 🤞 If I go into the gym, do a bunch of exercises and cross my fingers that it’s enough to grow and get stronger. 😔 And I have no feedback or sense of accomplishment along the way, 🤷‍♂️ I’m probably going to have a harder time staying motivated. 📊 Whereas if I’m chasing a goal and need to learn multiple different progressions and movements to work my way towards that goal, 😤 I’m going to be a lot more engaged and I’ll end end accomplishing a greater breadth of benefits. 🏆 Each workout, down to each exercise should serve a greater purpose and push you towards something that’s difficult to attain. 🏋️‍♂️ Exercises like powerlifting movements, calisthenic movements and more complex technical exercises do exactly this. 👊 If you front load each workout with exercises like these you can always follow them up with exercises like the lat pulldown later in the workout. 😅 Try not to miss out on a cool ass adventure by subbing out an exercise like the pull up 🫶 ‼️ I’ll have many progressions just like these pull ups available in my program coming soon! 🫡 #pullup #pullups #pullupsworkout #onearmpullup #calisthenics #latpulldown #backworkout #back #lats #latsworkout #fitnessmotivation

Lat pulldowns. We’re loading shoulder adduction and we’re in the frontal plane. What has to be understood is that the lats are not the only thing contributing to the pulldown overall. But how can I make the most of a pulldown for my lats? Wide grip. Simple. There’s other muscle groups that contribute to shoulder adduction, a simple google search will show you that. Form-wise, focus on driving that upper arm into the torso (you may have heard into the hip, but that’s literally the same thing.. your upper arm is falling into the torso still). - No you may ask about a neutral grip, that is loading shoulder extension. A sagittal plane pull. So not the same task. This prioritizes upper lats a bit more vs the regular pulldown more lower lats. The same idea about where the upper arm is, is still into play. The lats are not the only thing contributing to shoulder extension… a simple google search again will show you. - Things dealing with a neutral grip for lats will be better off somewhere below 120 degrees with the upper arm as well. So you don’t really need to load a bunch of different angles with lats. If you just did a row machine for upper lats, that’s perfectly fine. Reading comprehension. Never said a neutral grip pulldown was bad.. so re-read this paragraph.

Here’s the breakdown: PULL-UPS: • The king of bodyweight back exercises. • Huge lat, bicep, and core activation. • Builds real, functional strength and athletic control. • More transferable to real-world strength and movement. • Scalable: weighted pull-ups = serious upper-body gains. But… • Tough to master — many people struggle to do 1 rep with good form. • Requires solid shoulder stability and mobility. • Easier to plateau without progression strategy. LAT PULLDOWNS: • Controlled movement that isolates the lats. • Perfect for beginners or when pull-ups are too taxing. • Ideal for higher rep work and hypertrophy focus. • Easy to progressively overload with weight. But… • Less core and stabilizer activation. • Doesn’t translate as well to real-world pulling strength. • Often rushed or done with poor form (leaning back, short ROM). So which should YOU do? If you can do clean pull-ups — prioritise them. They give you more bang for your buck. If you’re building up to them, lat pulldowns are an excellent tool to develop strength and control. Best strategy? Use both. Start your session with heavy pull-ups, finish with lat pulldown variations for volume and stretch. Train smart. Build strong. Don’t skip the basics.
