The shoulders adapt to what we ask of them... and quietly forget the rest. This simple movement invites them to remember. Lying on your back, you’ll explore shoulder rotation and the strength behind it — directions your joints rarely get to visit in daily life. Try it with me (one arm at a time or both): Lie on your back — carpet, mat, whatever works Bend your elbows to 90 degrees, fingertips pointing up Lower the backs of your hands toward the floor above your shoulders Return to the starting position. Repeat a few times, then keep your arms in contact with the floor and gently press them down. Press/release a few times and notice how it feels. Does the movement feel smooth or sticky? Easy or effortful? What happens around your shoulder blades and upper back as you press into the ground? Notice what comes up without judgment. The goal isn’t a perfect range — it’s reconnection. 10 years ago, my body felt completely off. My lower back felt tight, my hips were tilted forward, and my posture didn’t feel stable no matter how much I trained. I tried stretching and isolating muscles, but the imbalance kept coming back. What changed things was when I started training my body as one connected system. By working on my back fascia line, I focused on connecting my feet, hamstrings, glutes and back instead of treating each part separately. Over time, my pelvis felt more supported and my movement became more balanced. This is one of the exercises I used. Your shoulders aren’t tight… they’re weak and restricted. This is a progression of the bilateral shoulder stretch I showed the other day; but now we’re taking it deeper. I’m using a foam roller to unlock full shoulder flexion at the gleno-humeral joint. Start on your knees. Place your hands on the roller. Then slowly sink back into a child’s pose as the roller glides forward. That smooth rollout does two things: • It opens the shoulders into full flexion • It creates a deep, controlled stretch through the lats, chest & joint capsule At the end range… hold for 10 seconds. Then come back up and repeat. Controlled. Intentional. No rushing. Run through this for a few reps and you’ll feel the difference immediately. Do this consistently and you’ll: • Improve shoulder mobility • Reduce impingement risk • Move with more freedom and strength This is Function in the Elite Evaluation; because a body that moves well, performs well.
