I’d be lying if I told you that I never yelled at my dogs. Nobody’s perfect and I don’t expect you to be. I sure am not. However, excessive yelling does nothing to aid you in communicating correctly and effectively with your dogs. It may relieve some frustration, but you’re only adding stress to the situation. Not only can your dogs become stressed because of your yelling, but they can also mimic your behavior and act aggressively towards other dogs or members of your family because of you yelling. If you can become more aware and calmer in these types of situations or any situations with your dog, it will be much more effective and beneficial for the purpose of training and communication. And just for clarity, raising your voice and becoming firm in your speaking is very different from excessive yelling and what I’m referring to #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice #dogbehavior do you yell at your dog? 👇🏽

Appeasement behaviour in dogs. Understanding context is important. Those cute little kisses might actually be your dog asking you to back OFF and give them SPACE. If you ENTER your dogs space and are met with “kisses” , it’s most likely appeasement (or maybe you didn’t wipe that ranch dressing off your mouth well enough). If your dog enters YOUR space and gives you “kisses” they probably want something from you (including affection). Fun fact- we do them TOO ! Maybe not licking someone’s face, but a polite “oh …uhm…no thank you” after someone makes us SUPER uncomfortable. . . . #dogbodylanguage #torontodogmoms #dogmomaf #dogmomlife❤️🐶🐾 #dogs #puppy #dogsoftoronto #dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogtrainersofinstagram #runyourdognotyourmouth #dogsofinstagram #germanshepherd #obedience #doglover #dogsinthe6ix #ecollartraining #reactivedog #reactivedogsofinstagram #torontodogs #rescuedog #rescuedogs #toronto #balanceddogtraining #puppy #torontobarks #balanceddogtraining #balancedtrainer #dog #virtualdogtraining #torontolife

This moment looks innocent. But for a dog, food equals safety. Interrupt it, and you teach tension instead of trust. That pattern shows up later — often where people least expect it. This is how dogs slowly become labeled “aggressive,” how behavior escalates, and how some eventually end up in shelters with no options left. I work with those dogs every day. Yes, I can help them but I’d rather prevent it from ever getting this far. If you want to understand behavior before it becomes a problem, follow @lizwolting.

Dog “reactivity” isn’t just bad behavior — it’s often a nervous system that’s stuck in overdrive. When a dog doesn’t have clear structure, boundaries, or meaningful outlets for their instinctual energy, they live just below threshold… constantly. It doesn’t take much for them to tip over into barking and lunging. That’s not defiance — that’s overwhelm. The fix isn’t just correcting the explosion. It’s changing the baseline. When we intentionally build in moments of regulation, give them purposeful ways to use their energy, and create clarity in their daily life, we help bring their nervous system out of survival mode. Over time, that’s where real emotional stability comes from. #dogtrainer #reactivedog #aussieshepherd #regulation #nervoussystem

Aggressive behaviors are behaviors that are defensive or offensive that dogs use to increase distance. So many people like to soften language and label these as “reactive” behaviors but let’s call it what it is… if your dog is barking, lunging, growling, snarling, and biting to make something go away that’s aggression.

Jumping on people is a behavior strongly motivated by inappropriate reinforcements. Dogs jump—especially when they are puppies—and when they are small, we think it’s “cute” and engage with them, rewarding the behavior. However this makes it difficult when they are big. As an alternative, by teaching our dogs to remain calm on place as guests come into the house, we can teach behaviors we do want and teach a calmer mindset even if guests may enter your home with more enthusiasm!

The brutal truth about reactive dogs no one wants to hear Everyone secretly hopes there is a quick fix for reactivity. One perfect tool, one magic cue, one trainer session that suddenly changes everything. But the brutal truth is much more boring: you just keep walking your dog past other dogs, and the reaction slowly gets smaller. Not in one day. Not in one week. Just a little bit less, over and over again. Our young German Shepherds in this video are a good example. They still react when another dog barks at them, you can see it. But now they calm down much faster. A month ago, the moment they saw any dog on the horizon, nothing else existed. No correction worked, they just completely lost it and went crazy. We didn’t have some magical “click moment”. We just kept going. Same walks, same rules, same calm corrections. And very slowly their reactions started to shrink. Now they could take a gentle reward without spinning out again. They are still far from perfect. But now they can get triggered and then actually come back to reality. They can notice our correction, think about it, and choose a different behavior. Give us one more month of these boring, regular walks, and I’m pretty confident we’ll end up with balanced, social German Shepherds that you can actually live with. That’s the real hard truth about reactivity: it’s usually not one big breakthrough, it’s a hundred tiny, boring wins that add up. If your dog is reacting now, don’t wait for magic. Just keep going. Keep walking, keep working, keep showing up. And if you want to see how this plays out with our two shepherd teenagers, stick around and follow the journey.
