Total Internal Reflection of Light ⬇️ Refraction of Light Refraction is the bending of light as it passes between different media due to a change in its speed. Light bends towards the normal when moving from a less dense to a denser medium and away from the normal when moving from a denser to a less dense medium. This effect is seen in phenomena like the apparent bending of objects in water. Critical Angle The critical angle is the angle of incidence at which light traveling from a denser to a less dense medium refracts along the boundary, making a 90-degree angle with the normal. If the angle of incidence exceeds this critical angle, the light is no longer refracted but totally reflected back into the denser medium. Total Internal Reflection (TIR) Total Internal Reflection occurs when light in a denser medium hits the boundary with a less dense medium at an angle greater than the critical angle, resulting in the light being completely reflected back into the denser medium. This principle is crucial in technologies like optical fibers, where it helps transmit light with minimal loss. n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂ A simple equation… but it decides something powerful: Will light pass through, or will it never escape? Imagine a laser entering a glass–air boundary. At small angles, it bends as it leaves the glass. That’s refraction. Expected. Predictable. But slowly increase the angle… At around 42° (for glass), everything changes. The refracted ray vanishes. No light goes out. Instead, all of it bounces back inside. This is Total Internal Reflection. Not absorption. Not loss. Just full reflection. And it quietly runs some of the technologies we rely on every day: • Fiber optics carrying internet across oceans • The brilliance inside diamonds • Light guiding smoothly through water and optical devices It feels almost magical… But it’s just physics doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. Some boundaries don’t let light pass.

Reflection and Refraction of a Cyan Laser Pointer: an affordable laser pointer with a color that’s uncommon on the market- 488nm producing a beautiful hue of blue. The beam is made brightly visible as internal reflection constrains most of the laser light to propagate along the interior of this block of acrylic (similar to the physics of fiber optics). ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get a cyan laser and clear demonstration block like these and other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #optics #lightpipe #internalreflection #refraction #refection #laser #physics #cyanlaser #488nm #physicsfun #physicstoy #fiberoptic #fiberoptics #science #snellslaw #scienceisawesome

how different types of mirrors interact with a beam of parallel light rays, demonstrating their distinct reflective properties. Plane Mirror: A plane mirror has a flat reflecting surface. When parallel light rays strike it, they reflect in a parallel manner, following the laws of reflection (angle of incidence equals angle of reflection at each point). This results in a virtual, upright image of the same size as the object. Concave Mirror: A concave mirror curves inward, like the inside of a spoon, and is also called a converging mirror. It focuses the parallel light rays to a single point called the principal focus after reflection. This property is used in applications like solar furnaces and car headlights to concentrate light. Convex Mirror: A convex mirror bulges outward, and is known as a diverging mirror. It causes the parallel light rays to spread out or diverge after reflection. The reflected rays appear to originate from a virtual focal point behind the mirror. This wide field of view makes them ideal for use as rear-view mirrors in vehicles and for security purposes.source ›@explainingscience_

It’s all about light and refraction! Both Pyrex glass and vegetable oil have a similar refractive index of around 1.47. This means they bend light in almost the same way. When immersed in vegetable oil, the glass and oil effectively "match," making the glass less visible because light doesn’t change direction as it passes through. It’s a cool optical illusion caused by the way light interacts with materials. Video - 1manlab This content is shared strictly for educational purposes. DM us for credit/removal.
