Total Internal Reflection of Light ⬇️ Refraction of Light Refraction is the bending of light as it passes between different media due to a change in its speed. Light bends towards the normal when moving from a less dense to a denser medium and away from the normal when moving from a denser to a less dense medium. This effect is seen in phenomena like the apparent bending of objects in water. Critical Angle The critical angle is the angle of incidence at which light traveling from a denser to a less dense medium refracts along the boundary, making a 90-degree angle with the normal. If the angle of incidence exceeds this critical angle, the light is no longer refracted but totally reflected back into the denser medium. Total Internal Reflection (TIR) Total Internal Reflection occurs when light in a denser medium hits the boundary with a less dense medium at an angle greater than the critical angle, resulting in the light being completely reflected back into the denser medium. This principle is crucial in technologies like optical fibers, where it helps transmit light with minimal loss. n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂ A simple equation… but it decides something powerful: Will light pass through, or will it never escape? Imagine a laser entering a glass–air boundary. At small angles, it bends as it leaves the glass. That’s refraction. Expected. Predictable. But slowly increase the angle… At around 42° (for glass), everything changes. The refracted ray vanishes. No light goes out. Instead, all of it bounces back inside. This is Total Internal Reflection. Not absorption. Not loss. Just full reflection. And it quietly runs some of the technologies we rely on every day: • Fiber optics carrying internet across oceans • The brilliance inside diamonds • Light guiding smoothly through water and optical devices It feels almost magical… But it’s just physics doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. Some boundaries don’t let light pass.

Refraction through lenses and prisms occurs when light changes direction due to a change in speed when passing through different media. A glass slab shifts light parallel to its initial path. A prism refracts light, dispersing it into a spectrum. Convex lenses converge light rays to a focal point, while concave lenses diverge them. These effects arise from the shape and refractive index of the materials, altering light's speed and direction. Want more interesting content like this ? how different types of mirrors interact with a beam of parallel light rays, demonstrating their distinct reflective properties. Plane Mirror: A plane mirror has a flat reflecting surface. When parallel light rays strike it, they reflect in a parallel manner, following the laws of reflection (angle of incidence equals angle of reflection at each point). This results in a virtual, upright image of the same size as the object. Concave Mirror: A concave mirror curves inward, like the inside of a spoon, and is also called a converging mirror. It focuses the parallel light rays to a single point called the principal focus after reflection. This property is used in applications like solar furnaces and car headlights to concentrate light. Convex Mirror: A convex mirror bulges outward, and is known as a diverging mirror. It causes the parallel light rays to spread out or diverge after reflection. The reflected rays appear to originate from a virtual focal point behind the mirror. This wide field of view makes them ideal for use as rear-view mirrors in vehicles and for security purposes.source ›@explainingscience_

Real Beauty Of Physics ❤️ his experiment reveals the science behind how white light is actually made of many colors. When a single beam of white light enters a glass prism, it slows down and bends, a process called refraction. Because each color in white light has a different wavelength, each one bends by a different amount as it passes through the glass. Red light bends the least, while violet bends the most. As the light exits the prism and bends again, these small differences spread the colors apart, creating a visible spectrum. This phenomenon is called dispersion, and it proves that white light is not pure but a combination of all visible colors. Isaac Newton famously demonstrated this in the 17th century, showing that the prism does not create the colors—it only separates them. The same physics explains natural rainbows, the shifting colors on soap bubbles, oil films, and the rainbow patterns seen on CDs and DVDs. A simple prism setup, using only light and glass, uncovers one of the most fundamental and beautiful principles of optics. We do not own any of the content. All credit goes to the respective owners.
