Comment “Technique” below for a form review. This is how pros row. For steady state rowing workouts at low stroke rate, you’re burning useless effort by punching your arms out on the return. It’s using your shoulders, and there is no need for that on the return. For sprints, yes, your hands have to go more “straight in and out”. But for long rows? Try this instead: ✅ Relax your arms down and out. No shoulder tension, keeping the handle low to the thighs ✅ As soon as the handle passes your knees, bend them, and slowly ✨ trickle ✨ your hands upwards to the catch. Watch any pro row and that’s what they do. And you should too! Coach Austin 🤘 . . . #row #rower #rowing #rowingform #rowingmachine

A cleaner finish starts with staying connected through the whole stroke. When the blade stays loaded through the last part of the drive, the release feels lighter, cleaner and more controlled. One of the easiest ways to feel this is through your feet. Try this drill: Feet out of the straps Arms only rowing Balls of the feet only Heels only Then whole foot connected to the footplate Notice how much more stable and powerful the finish feels when the whole foot stays connected. You can do it in the boat, but the erg gives you instant feedback. You’ll feel the connection, hear the flywheel pick up, and see the split respond. If you want a better finish, start by staying connected through your feet. Save this and try it in your next warm-up.

Josh is one of the best boat movers I've coached and is a great example of how doing the basics well makes it look easy. The details of rowing can get complicated but the fundamentals don't have to be. With this reel I did my best to reduce it to the absolute basics of how to make a boat move fast. If you could do everything on this list well, you'd be 95% of the way to reaching your efficiency potential. This is how I'd coach - what are your fundamentals? Is there anything you'd add / remove / disagree with? Save this post ready for your next video review session and see how many of these points you can compare with. #rowing #aviron #rudern #rowingtechnique #gbrowing

🔥 FAST Sprints on the rower require SPECIAL technique! This is NOT the technique you’d use for any row longer than 2 minutes max! These tips are focused on peaking power for 10-30ish second sprints primarily! 🔥 Tip 1: don’t bend your legs up all the way! ✅ Focus on heels down, with about a 90 degree leg bend! 🔥 Tip 2: focus on MORE lean at the front! ✅ Peak power comes from the hip swing after the leg drive. Without a lot of lean forward, you’re gonna miss out on power! Think “11 to 1 o’clock” with your body! 🔥 Tip 3: don’t fall off the seat! ✅ Apply your force ONLY horizontally and try to “sit heavy” in the seat! 💪 Combine these tips with aggression and a high stroke rate, and you’re set to CRUSH any row sprint that comes your way! Now, DO IT! Coach Austin 🤘 . . . #row #rower #rowing #rowingispassion #rowingmachine #erg #rowingworkout #cardio #sprints #hyrox #crossfit #orangetheoryfitness

There are the technical secrets that I learned from teammates in the GB rowing team that coaches will never tell you because they either cant explain it, dont understand it, or havent experienced being in a fast boat themselves. And here is how you can these changes into your rowing, so that you can row more efficiently and go faster for the same effort. Number 1 of 3, At higher stroke rates, row shorter. As a novice, it is good to learn to row to full length, but once you are relatively competent, it can fight against you. You can end up spending too much time sitting on the stern at the catch. You can create an artificially heavy load due to the blades being nearly parallel to the hull. You can make it really tricky to rate higher. Number 2 of 3, use your hamstrings to pull yourself up the slide. As a novice, you are taught to “let the boat come to you” and “feel the run of the boot” - which IS what you want... but realistically, the boat is not going to come to you at the speed required to hit competitive stroke rates. Once you get your blades out clean and get rocked over, treat the slide like a leg curl machine. Pull that footplate into you - FAST. Number 3 of 3, and probably the hardest one to explain... Is, at the catch, getting feeling of letting the blade fill with water BEFORE you push. The catch is so hard because you need to be patient and quick, you need to be loose and strong. This is something I only picked up when I rowed with someone who was better than me technically, and its why any chance we can get as edge rowing coaches - we are getting IN boats with athletes and showing them what it FEELS like. Smooth = fast Load the legs, Engage the lats, and watch your drive improve. If your back isn’t turning on when you row, you’re missing a huge piece of the stroke. This is the simple thing that finally made it click for me. This is the biggest beginner trap in rowing and how to avoid it and not get injured Pulling rather than pushing. It’s a pushing sport not a pulling sport. Your legs are stronger than your upper body so use the stronger muscles to go fast and be effective Picture this - the connection goes from the spoon in the water, up to the handle, along your arm, through your trunk, down into the legs and onto the footplate. You start pushing and it goes back up along the same pathways. Through the legs, through the trunk and core, up through the shoulder into the arms and onto the handle and back to the spoon. KEY LESSON: Push through the legs, hang off the upper body. Don’t just pull the upper body. Pulling leads to injury. Pushing is effective and better. #rowing #rowingmachine #rowingrelated #worldrowing #concept2

Fix your rowing 🚨 | Rowing 101 Most people overuse their arms and underuse their legs on the rower. Think: legs, body, arms — then arms, body, legs. Keep a loose grip on the handle — you’re guiding the pull, not choking it. Unlike the SkiErg, the rower gives you a longer distance to produce force, so you don’t need to yank from the start. Aim for a more even distribution of force, your force curve should look like a smooth bell shape, not a spike. Work on your tempo: 👉🏼1 second drive phase 👉🏼 3 seconds controlled recovery on the way in Move with control, not chaos, efficiency is key Save this for your next session and fix your row. #hyroxtraining #hyroxathlete #hyroxprep #hyroxworld #hyroxcommunity #hyroxcoach #hybridtraining #rowertechnique #fixyourrow #rowing101
