Comment “Technique” below for a form review. This is how pros row. For steady state rowing workouts at low stroke rate, you’re burning useless effort by punching your arms out on the return. It’s using your shoulders, and there is no need for that on the return. For sprints, yes, your hands have to go more “straight in and out”. But for long rows? Try this instead: ✅ Relax your arms down and out. No shoulder tension, keeping the handle low to the thighs ✅ As soon as the handle passes your knees, bend them, and slowly ✨ trickle ✨ your hands upwards to the catch. Watch any pro row and that’s what they do. And you should too! Coach Austin 🤘 . . . #row #rower #rowing #rowingform #rowingmachine

Josh is one of the best boat movers I've coached and is a great example of how doing the basics well makes it look easy. The details of rowing can get complicated but the fundamentals don't have to be. With this reel I did my best to reduce it to the absolute basics of how to make a boat move fast. If you could do everything on this list well, you'd be 95% of the way to reaching your efficiency potential. This is how I'd coach - what are your fundamentals? Is there anything you'd add / remove / disagree with? Save this post ready for your next video review session and see how many of these points you can compare with. #rowing #aviron #rudern #rowingtechnique #gbrowing

There are the technical secrets that I learned from teammates in the GB rowing team that coaches will never tell you because they either cant explain it, dont understand it, or havent experienced being in a fast boat themselves. And here is how you can these changes into your rowing, so that you can row more efficiently and go faster for the same effort. Number 1 of 3, At higher stroke rates, row shorter. As a novice, it is good to learn to row to full length, but once you are relatively competent, it can fight against you. You can end up spending too much time sitting on the stern at the catch. You can create an artificially heavy load due to the blades being nearly parallel to the hull. You can make it really tricky to rate higher. Number 2 of 3, use your hamstrings to pull yourself up the slide. As a novice, you are taught to “let the boat come to you” and “feel the run of the boot” - which IS what you want... but realistically, the boat is not going to come to you at the speed required to hit competitive stroke rates. Once you get your blades out clean and get rocked over, treat the slide like a leg curl machine. Pull that footplate into you - FAST. Number 3 of 3, and probably the hardest one to explain... Is, at the catch, getting feeling of letting the blade fill with water BEFORE you push. The catch is so hard because you need to be patient and quick, you need to be loose and strong. This is something I only picked up when I rowed with someone who was better than me technically, and its why any chance we can get as edge rowing coaches - we are getting IN boats with athletes and showing them what it FEELS like. If you want to nail the finish, you can't wait until the end of the stroke. It starts with keeping flat wrists and elbows in from the catch to the finish. What really helped get me into a strong finish position was imagining a string pulling my elbows straight back, I was much more comfortable at the finish. Rowing is a complex movement that engages multiple muscle groups throughout the body. The primary muscles involved include the latissimus dorsi, which plays a significant role in pulling the arms back, along with the trapezius and rhomboids, which help retract the scapulae. The posterior deltoids also contribute by assisting in shoulder extension. The biceps brachii and brachialis are heavily involved in elbow flexion during the pulling phase. In addition to the upper body, the lower body and core are equally important in generating power. The quadriceps extend the knees during the drive phase, while the gluteus maximus and hamstrings facilitate hip extension. The gastrocnemius and soleus contribute to plantarflexion at the ankle. The erector spinae and rectus abdominis provide stability to the spine, ensuring controlled movement throughout the stroke. The obliques also assist in maintaining rotational control and balance. The coordinated effort of these muscle groups allows for efficient force transfer from the legs through the core and into the upper body, making rowing a full-body exercise. Speed doesn’t come from chasing perfection—it comes from consistency. Real gains happen when you’re willing to make a change, and disciplined enough to see it through. Pick three simple technical points. Keep them front of mind. Work them into every stroke until they feel automatic. That’s how true speed is built—one focused session at a time. 🚣‍♀️💨 #rowing #worldchampion #atheltemindset #college #ivyleague

Rowing isn’t what you think it is. The “way to row” is a lot more dynamic than it might seem! We do NOT want to think about the handle moving in a straight line in and out of the rower. This makes the motion very robotic and can tire out muscles that aren’t helpful for efficient rowing. We also do NOT want to “swirl” or “swoosh” the handle as if you’re taking your oars in and out of the water. This leads to too much motion and inefficiency and can lead to chaos at higher stroke rates! Both are wrong! But the RIGHT way to row involves a combination of both. On the return, you want to RELAX your arms and shoulders to allow the handle to tap down close to your thighs. Once you pass the knees, the handle starts to track UP into a lifted position at the catch (front) position! On the drive, the handle drives back fairly straight, but in a slightly diagonal motion to maximize stroke distance! And then, the process repeats! Once you can start implementing this into your rowing, you’ll feel just how fluid, efficient, and strong your rowing can be! Now, DO IT!
