Bookmark and share this one. In my workbook @howtomeetyourself I included the butterfly hug and lots of other somatic practices. The butterfly hug is one of the most quick and effective nervous system regulation tool there is. Bilateral stimulation has been used to treat PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Your body wants to be regulated, it just needs your help. The best part about the butterfly hug is you can literally do it anywhere. Great for kids too! I found myself using this the other day when I went to sit down for lunch. I felt anxious and didn’t know why. I couldn’t calm myself so I just did this for a minute or two and was right back in my body 3 minutes later. I hope this helps you, too #selfhealers

Anxiety is ENERGY⚡️Trying to figure out why you feel anxious, or talk yourself into calming down will never release its charge. You know this though, I bet you’ve tried like we all do! In fact, these approaches often agitate us even more because fighting it our solving it doesn’t actually address the root of anxiety as an energy. Energy wants to move not be reasoned with or intellectualized away. Instead we need to give our bodies an outlet to experience and express the built up energy and stress hormones and expel itself. Here are 3 great body-based practices to ease out of the sympathetic nervous system’s fight/flight mobilization response. 1️⃣Spinal Twisting 2️⃣Full body Bouncing 3️⃣Butterfly Tapping These are safe, contained ways to move through this built up energy, break it up, and discharge its stuck intensity, naturally allowing you to settle down a bit. These practices will naturally calm the nervous system bringing you back into the present moment. After you practice, notice how you feel. You might only feel slightly better, maybe only 1%, but that’s actually all it takes, one step at a time. We cannot expect to go from chronic dysregulation to a zen buddha over night! These are also great practices to do before an Internal Family Systems parts work session if you are coming into a session particularly overwhelmed and flooded with anxiety. After practicing, you’ve created enough space and distinction between you and the emotion so that you can then begin to approach the the part of you carrying the anxiety and ask it what it wants to tell you. Your body doesn’t heal in one big moment. It softens in small, unexpected ways, when it finally feels safe enough to let go of what it’s been holding. Like: • You start crying for “no reason” • Old memories surface out of nowhere • You feel exhausted but can’t seem to rest • You get random waves of anger or sadness • You crave more alone time or nature • You feel tightness in your chest, throat, or belly • You start shaking, trembling, or yawning more • Your body feels heavy and tight • You can’t tolerate things that once felt “normal” • You finally feel safe enough to fall apart a little That’s your body whispering: I’m done surviving. I’m ready to release. Because trauma doesn’t just live in your head — it hides in your habits, your defenses, your silence. And when safety returns to the body… the deepest healing can begin 💫 If you’re in a season of healing & release— I see you, you’re not alone. If you’re an over thinker, you know how difficult it can be to switch off. You might struggle to find balance and harmony as you’re constantly trying to solve mental knots and internal battles. Overthinking about work or relationships is rooted in fear - fear of feeling unsafe, fear of failing or not being enough. So instead, you plot and plan for every eventuality. The following somatic therapy exercises can be really helpful to soothe your nervous system and feel safe: 1. Butterfly hug. This exercise focus on self-soothing anxiety and stress by gently tapping the top of your chest and shoulders in a rhythmic pattern. Continue tapping while breathing deeply until you feel yourself relaxing. 2. Vague nerve massage. Your vagus nerve regulates your parasympathetic nervous system (rest/digest) so you can reduce stress improved digestion and calm down. ➡️ Begin to massage the sides of your neck with circular motion down towards your collarbone for a few minutes. ➡️ Massage the bony bits behind your ear with light circular motion. ➡️ Continue to massage the upper part of your chest and collarbone in circular motions. 3. Shake it off. Releasing pent up tension and emotion by shaking your various body parts can be helpful to let go of stressful energy that blocks you from feeling free and in harmony. Which one would you try ? ❤️ #somaticexercise #somatictherapy #overthinking #overthinker #relaxationtechniques #nervoussystemregulation #hypnotherapyregulates

It’s hard not to feel it… the situation right now is scary. And even if you are safe…the tight chest, clenched jaw, restless legs, random wave of tension for no reason, aren’t just random tics. It’s somatic anxiety (when stress shows up as physical symptoms instead of just racing thoughts) And let’s be honest. You can’t always journal your way out of that. Sometimes your nervous system doesn’t need more thinking. It needs movements that help discharge stored stress, regulate the nervous system, and shift you out of fight-or-flight mode. Save this for the next time and send this to a loved one <3 {somatic anxiety, physical anxiety symptoms, nervous system regulation, anxiety relief techniques, stress release exercises, trauma-informed movement, vagus nerve stimulation, fight or flight response, anxiety in the body, self regulation tools, calming the nervous system, somatic healing, mind body connection, stress management tools, yoga} #somatichealing #anxietyrelief #nervoussystemregulation #mentalhealthtools #mindbodyconnection

Why does somatic shaking work? Your nervous system has built-in mechanisms for processing stress. In the wild, animals instinctively shake after a stressful event to reset their bodies (I've seen my dog do it!). Humans, however, tend to suppress this natural response, causing stress to get stuck in the body. Somatic shaking helps complete the stress cycle and bring the nervous system back to regulation. Here's how it supports your beautiful nervous system: ✅ Releases stored trauma from the body ✅ Activates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest mode) ✅ Reduces anxiety and stress ✅ Helps move out of freeze or shutdown states ✅ Brings awareness back into the body Want more tips and trick to tame your nervous system? 3 somatic techniques to calm anxiety instantly 🫀 1️⃣ Bilateral Thigh Tapping Alternate tapping your left and right thighs. The rhythmic left–right movement engages both brain hemispheres through bilateral stimulation, helping the nervous system shift out of fight-or-flight and back toward balance. 2️⃣ Butterfly Hug 🦋 Cross your arms over your chest and alternate tapping your shoulders. This technique, used in EMDR therapy, stimulates both sides of the brain while activating the vagus nerve, which slows heart rate and reduces emotional intensity. 3️⃣ Self-Containment Hold Place your right hand under your left armpit and your left hand on your right shoulder. This steady pressure activates deep pressure receptors in the skin, sending signals of safety to the brain and increasing parasympathetic calm. Try each for 60 seconds. Notice which one your body responds to most. 🌿🛋Somatic therapy can also be very effectively done online because most somatic techniques don’t require physical contact. Things like: tracking sensations noticing breath patterns orienting to the environment gentle movement or shaking grounding exercises awareness of posture or tension All of these can be guided verbally, and sometimes clients actually feel more comfortable exploring their body at home rather than in an unfamiliar office. In fact, for some clients, virtual sessions can even be helpful because they are already in their own environment, where their nervous system patterns naturally show up. #somatictherapy #therapysessions
