The seated face pull is a great variation of the traditional face pull because sitting down helps reduce momentum and keeps the focus on your upper back and rear delts. To set it up, attach a rope handle to a cable machine at about upper chest or face height. Sit on a bench or the floor facing the machine and grab the rope with both hands using a neutral grip. Extend your arms fully so there is tension in the cable. Sit upright with your chest tall, core engaged, and shoulders relaxed. From this position, pull the rope toward your face while leading with your elbows. As the rope gets close, allow your hands to separate so the ends of the rope move toward the sides of your face. At the end of the movement, focus on squeezing your shoulder blades together and contracting your rear delts and upper back. Slowly return the rope to the starting position while maintaining control and tension in the cable. Key technique tips: Keep your torso upright throughout the movement Lead the pull with your elbows, not your hands Avoid shrugging your shoulders Control the return instead of letting the weight pull you forward The seated face pull is excellent for improving shoulder stability, posture, and upper back strength, making it a valuable exercise for anyone who lifts weights regularly. Face pulls are a great way to strengthen your posterior shoulder muscle and may prevent injury or compensation relative to your rotator cuff (which a LOT of people deal with). They can also really assist in posture correction so ALL of your lifts and functionality outside of the gym benefit. . HOW TO: Grip your rope or bands from underneath, with thumbs up or facing you for ease of rotation and instead of pulling the cable to your face or neck, aim 🎯 for your forehead. This allows you to really open up those shoulders, get a good external rotation and also ensures a full & proper range of motion! ✅ . Your elbows and hands should end on the same plane of motion as you squeeze your shoulder blades together. Do not lean forward. . Keep in mind 🧐 that the top 👆 exercise isn’t necessarily ❌ wrong, especially if you’re targeting more of your upper back and NOT your shoulders (which we’re focusing on here). When some are overactive and others are weak, it pulls your face off balance. Over time, that’s what exaggerates asymmetry, deepens lines on one side, and even makes you look older. Puckering your lips and moving them side to side works because it activates the orbicularis oris (the muscle around your mouth) and the zygomatic muscles (your smile/lift muscles). These are often uneven — one side firing more than the other — which creates drooping or uneven smile lines. By moving evenly across both sides, you retrain weaker muscles to fire, while releasing tension in the dominant ones!!! AND for my science people, the science backs this up! Research shows that targeted facial exercises increase muscle thickness and strength, improve blood flow, and enhance symmetry over time (similar to how resistance training changes your body). Since facial muscles are directly attached to your skin, strengthening and balancing them also improves how your skin sits and reduces the drag that causes sagging.
