What does YOUR Force Curve look like? A proper stroke should create a fairly “bell shaped” curve, giving a proper distribution of leg drive, hip swing, and arm pull. Notice in the first example how the peak comes at the end… that’s how you know you’re yanking too hard with your arms! Notice in the second example how the curve has a steep fall off… that’s because the leg drive is strong, but the hip swing isn’t accelerated and the arm draw power is minimal! Think of you stroke as an ACCELERATION from the drive, to the swing, to the pull. Hope that helps!! Burn more calories on the rower by SLOWING DOWN! For those that aren’t experienced with using a rowing machine properly, they think that faster = more calories. The “speed” of your rowing, aka the “stroke rate” is simply a measure of the rhythm of how many strokes you’re taking in… NOT HOW HARD YOU ARE TAKING STROKES! To make rowing burn a lot of calories and actually feel like a good workout, you need to take strokes HARDER, and NOT row “faster”! Rowing machines generate resistance based on how much EFFORT goes into the drive of each stroke. You could have a stroke rate of 30 strokes per minute, but if you’re not putting EFFORT into each stroke, you’re doing a whole lot of NOTHING! Hence the 700 calories per hour that happens when I just bounce up and down with no actual effort. By slowing your stroke rate / rhythm down, you can actually get a better workout on the rower because you can focus on your form, but more importantly, putting more EFFORT into each stroke! That’s why you can see that at 20 strokes per minute, I can burn 2 times as many calories because I’m actually TRYING HARD each stroke - even though the rate is lower! Can you generate even more by rowing hard AND using a high stroke rate? Absolutely! But you can’t row well at a fast stroke rate until you learn how to row well at a low stroke rate, first! Start rowing SLOW if you ACTUALLY want to start getting in a good workout on the rower! 💪 Questions? Ask them! Row Erg Technique 🙌 With how big Hyrox is becoming, I thought I better do a video to break down the rower. Personally, this is my favourite erg but it can be made a lot harder if you aren’t doing good form. So let’s get into it: 1️⃣The Stroke - Think legs, body, arms, then arms, body legs. - Your chest and arms shouldn’t move before your legs are fully extended. - On the reverse, your arms should be fully extended before your knees bend. - Most of the power comes from the legs so think of this movement as a push rather than a pull. - Keep your chest tall at the catch, try not to let your back round too much. 2️⃣Handle Height - Aim for your sternum or your bra strap each stroke. 3️⃣Chain - When coming into the catch (on the way back) try to keep your chain as still as possible & avoid “slapping” the chain. - Focus on keeping the chain inside the box it comes out of without touching the top or bottom.
